Even just being born is not enough. To achieve omniscience for the sake of others, one must abandon all desires of this life and not care about the happiness or suffering of this life. If one does this, one will become afraid and shrink back. When one shrinks back like this, one should think about how lowly one's life will become if one abandons the Dharma. If one does not make effort oneself, even the afflictions will not have compassion. Generosity and so on will not say, 'You seem unable to accomplish it, let us help you complete it.' The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not protect you either. If they did, Avalokiteśvara alone would have already placed all beings in liberation, and those who are not liberated are so because they have not been protected. If you make effort yourself, early effort leads to early liberation, and late effort leads to late liberation. Looking at others, too, abandoning the Dharma does not lead to happiness in this life. If one acts according to the Dharma, one will become happier and happier, which is obvious. One should think about how much happiness one has enjoyed in previous lives, but was also deceived; how much suffering one has experienced, but has not obtained any result. The suffering of practicing the Dharma now is not even a tiny fraction of the suffering of the lower realms, and it has great fruit, being able to completely end all suffering. The happiness of abandoning the Dharma is no greater than the happiness of the past. If one abandons the Dharma here, one will have to experience endless suffering in the future, so one should think like this and not mistreat oneself. Now, one does not properly measure the Dharma, so one goes in the direction of mistreating oneself. If one measures it properly, the fault of fear and mistreating oneself is great. If one mistreats oneself, one will not even be able to achieve a good rebirth, but will only fall lower and lower. Seventh is patience and joy. Patience: One needs both patience with suffering and patience with harm. Without patience with suffering, no Dharma can be started, just as Geshe Tonpa used the analogy of alcohol. If one does not endure harm and retaliates, one will not become a moral person who refrains from harming others, so one should cultivate patience in various ways. 'Even a sin committed in a single moment can cause one to dwell in the Avici hell for countless eons.' Just thinking about karma and its effects is also helpful for cultivating patience. After thinking like this.

As it is said, "Even if I am burned to death, or my head is cut off, I would rather endure it. In no way shall I bow down to the enemy of afflictions." Likewise, one needs to have perseverance without being weary of the door of Dharma. Furthermore, as it is said, "One who desires qualities and dwells in the forest should not scrutinize the faults of others. One should not generate the thought, 'I am particularly superior, I am the best.'" As it is said, one should not inflict wounds on others' faults and contradictory behaviors, possessing these six virtues. Because if one exposes the wounds of others, it endangers the method, thereby exhausting all virtuous deeds. As it is said, "Do not be arrogant because you possess discipline, do not despise others because they lack discipline. If one despises others merely because of discipline, then the one who despises is the one who lacks discipline." One should become part of the group that has fallen. Therefore, rely on the great compassion that is in accordance with the Dharma, and with the thought that one has vowed to abandon all the faults of all those who consider sentient beings as relatives, but still has not been able to abandon even a single fault of sentient beings, feel ashamed and reverent. Eighth, having mindfulness gathered by the five limbs: immediately repenting upon remembering the downfalls that occurred in the past, this is mindfulness based on the past extreme. If downfalls occur in the future, one should still clothe oneself in the understanding that they will be rectified according to the Dharma, this is mindfulness based on the future extreme. For downfalls that occur in the present, like a great hero quickly stopping blood, one should rise from that very seat and confess, or even if one cannot rise from that very seat, one should not associate with the downfall for even a night, just as the great ocean does not associate with corpses, this is mindfulness based on the middle extreme. One should carefully examine where one dwells, with whom one associates, what one enjoys, what one does, and how one proceeds, so that one does not violate the training of a Bodhisattva, and so that one does not interrupt the attainment of great enlightenment for the sake of others. If one finds that there are obstacles to these, one should not engage in them, this is mindfulness that goes before all actions. When engaging in conduct, one should repeatedly examine the state of body and mind. In short, that alone is the characteristic of guarding awareness.
