Even when practicing great Bodhi, one must abandon all attachment to the three spheres. In short, even with compassion, one must abandon the state of coexisting with clinging to entities; even when meditating on emptiness, one must abandon the state of not being grasped by compassion; one must abandon all states that do not possess the essence of compassion, thereby achieving purity. To summarize further, one should not engage in any non-virtuous actions of the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Thus, the noble Manjushri personally pledged before the Tathagata King of Dragon Sound, and I myself also pledge and vow before the Buddhas of the ten directions. Regarding this, Sharawa said: If there is no basis, this pledge that I have made before the Buddhas of the ten directions is also clearly recorded in the treatises of the noble ones. Here, it appears that if a basis exists, it is the tradition of the noble ones; if it does not exist, it is the tradition of the Acharyas, and the two are different. Just as the Pratimoksha vows differ due to different schools, and the rituals also differ, leading to different boundaries of abandonment and protection. Do these two traditions also differ in the boundaries of protection and the attainment of abandonment due to different rituals? Even though the rituals are different, it is for the purpose of achieving no difference between them. Then, what is the definitive meaning of the stated number of root downfalls? The tradition of the noble ones is the definitive meaning. As stated in the Sutra of the Essence of Space, the eight practices for beginners mostly belong to the precepts of aspiration. Those of kings and ministers mostly belong to the common Pratimoksha vows. Explaining emptiness to sentient beings who have not been tamed, and so on, is shown as a root downfall, considering the severity of the fault. Even if these occur, the vows are not lost. Therefore, the tradition of the noble ones is the definitive meaning. Thus, the vows have been pledged. Third, regarding the method of learning the precepts, there are two parts: the connection of learning the precepts and the actual explanation of the precepts. The first part is: One's own body, speech, and mind are the cause of purity, residing in the vows that are the nature of the entering mind. As it is said, as pledged earlier during the ritual, one's own body, speech, and mind, which are not defiled by the non-virtuous side, become the cause of purity, which is also the vow to learn the precepts of the Buddha's sons, residing in the vows of the Bodhisattva's discipline, which is the nature of the entering mind, therefore explaining its precepts.
