Being fond of the discipline of precepts, one should learn from the Buddha. Not desiring to quickly attain enlightenment for oneself, but for the sake of a single sentient being, one should abide at the edge of samsara. One should purify immeasurable and inconceivable pure lands. Having started from the name, one should abide in the ten directions. One should purify all the deeds of one's body and speech. One should also purify the deeds of one's mind, and not do any unwholesome deeds. It is said that making such a promise is praised by the wise. Sharawa said: Bodhisattvas such as Samantabhadra or Akashagarbha, for sixty intermediate kalpas, offered piles of jewels as large as Mount Meru three times a day and three times a night to the perfectly complete Buddhas and the Sangha of monks, and generated the mind of enlightenment, as it is said in the Sutra of the Three Aggregates and others. Therefore, even if taking from a place where there is nothing, one should not be stingy and should make great offerings and accumulations of merit as much as one is able. As it is said, one should first perform the rituals of welcoming and offering to the manifested form of the Thus-Gone One. In the main part, in front of the protectors of the world, the Buddhas of the ten directions, because it is the ultimate result, or whatever enlightenment one attains, in order to perfect all the benefits of oneself and others, I shall attain that enlightenment, thus generating the mind. And for what purpose does one generate the mind? One generates the mind in order to entertain all sentient beings as guests. What is the work or guest that one entertains? It is to liberate those beings from samsara. Therefore, completely liberating all those beings from samsara and placing them in perfect enlightenment is the vow of aspiration. Sharawa said so. Next is the vow of entering. The precepts of a Bodhisattva are taken with unbearable compassion and love for all sentient beings. But these two, hatred and its retinue, are the cause of abandoning sentient beings, so if one accepts them, there is a danger of abandoning the aspiration, and there is also a danger of fundamental downfall. If one abandons the aspiration, then because one has abandoned the basis, one will also abandon the entering (Bodhisattva conduct); if one abandons taking refuge, one will abandon individual liberation.

Because of this, harm has been done to me and my friends in the past, is being done now, and will be done in the future, making it three times three, a total of six. Help has been given to those who are not friendly to me in the past, is being given now, and will be given in the future, making it three times three, a total of nine. All that arises from these nine causes are objects of mental torment, namely the intention to harm, and the mind of anger that arises from inner turmoil when harm is done immediately. The body, possessions, and all roots of virtue of a Bodhisattva are dedicated to sentient beings, and even the omniscient wisdom, the fruit of practice over countless eons, is dedicated to the welfare of sentient beings. If one clings to one's own meager possessions and is unable to give to others, taking on such miserliness, there is a risk of incurring a root downfall. Therefore, regarding such miserliness: Since all sentient beings desire happiness, and generate the mind for enlightenment, when sentient beings find happiness themselves, why then do you become angry? If you do not wish for happiness for them, how can you desire enlightenment for yourself? In this way, a Bodhisattva generates the mind to establish all sentient beings in perfect enlightenment. Now, being disturbed in one's mind by even the slightest excellence of others is jealousy, which is contradictory to that. Therefore, from the moment of taking the vow to engage in these practices until the attainment of perfect enlightenment, one should not do these things. That is to say, in the Pratimoksha of a Bodhisattva, it is said that a Bodhisattva does not have deceit, miserliness, jealousy, or slander, nor the mind of discouragement thinking that one cannot achieve omniscience. If one possesses these four and yet claims to be a Bodhisattva, it is hypocrisy, and the meaning is the same. Therefore, these four are the main representations. All fifty-seven precepts mentioned in the Ratnavali should not be accepted. Because for a beginner, it is impossible to generate all these in one's being, and it cannot be accomplished. As it is said in the chapter on ethics, there is no fault in being overwhelmed by strong afflictions and experiencing them again and again. However, as soon as they arise, one should not accept them, but must abandon them like driving away a black snake whose venom spreads quickly when it comes into one's lap, or like driving away an old, barren yak cow.
