Therefore, it is called being able to bestow vows. Because one does not look at even a small amount of material possessions, one is called compassionate. Moreover, this compassion is not only for one disciple, but extends to all sentient beings, thinking that after this person obtains the vows, he will become the protector and refuge of all sentient beings, one must have such a thought. According to the tradition of the Acharya, the seven-branch offering is performed extensively in advance. According to the tradition of the Noble Ones, both aspiration and engagement are preceded only by prostrations and offerings. These are the rituals with an object of refuge. Regarding the matter of having an object of refuge, it is not right to say, "I will bestow the vows," and then not do it. It is like entrusting goods to me but not sending them, or like me speaking the Dharma but no one listening. It is also not right to force others to accept the vows without any possibility of turning back. It is said that one must be qualified. Secondly, regarding the ritual of taking vows through faith from the Buddhas of the ten directions when there is no actual object of refuge. It is divided into three parts: the necessity of explaining it, the source from which it is explained, and the actual ritual of how to explain it. The first is: If there is no such effort, If a qualified lama is not found, Then other than that, taking vows, The true ritual should be explained. As it is said, the person who serves as the basis is one whose intelligence has reached its peak in entering and taking vows. Regarding taking vows from an actual lama who exists as an object of refuge, in the manner of dispelling doubts as mentioned earlier, just as one would say, "If there is one in India, I will go there," even if the lama from whom one is to take the vows is in China or anywhere in Jambudvipa that one can travel to, one should go there without fearing difficulties and with effort. If, as shown above, such a lama possessing the four qualities does not exist at all, or even if he exists, but going there would endanger one's life or celibacy, and one cannot find him due to such faults, then, other than the ritual of taking vows from an actual lama who exists as an object of refuge, even if there is no actual lama as an object of refuge, in the presence of the Buddhas of the ten directions, with one's own faith, the ritual of taking the vows of a Bodhisattva's discipline, which is free from exaggeration and accurate, should also be explained. Regarding this, Sharawa said: The standard for measuring whether there is an object of refuge or not is that there is no place in Jambudvipa that one can travel to. One can take vows using this ritual without an object of refuge. If one knows that there is one in India, but takes vows in Tibet using this ritual out of laziness, it is not right.

Yes! Now, if there is the arising of vows, this is precisely the time for the formation of the ritual for taking vows before the Buddhas of the ten directions. Now, it is said that it also exists in India, but it is different from what is commonly known. Now, it is not known whether it exists in India, nor is it known whether it exists in Tibet. Secondly, what is the source from which this ritual is explained? Regarding this, in the past, Mañjuśrī (འཇམ་པའི་དཔལ།, Sanskrit: Manjushri, Romanized Sanskrit: Mañjuśrī, literal meaning: Gentle Glory), transformed into Ambarāja (ཨམྤ་རཱའ་ཛར།, Sanskrit: Ambarāja, Romanized Sanskrit: Ambarāja, literal meaning: Sky King), how did he generate the mind of enlightenment? The Buddha-field of Mañjuśrī, as it is said in the Ornament Sutra, is written here clearly. It means that, as the basis of a person, even if the thought of wanting to take vows arises, but if a preceptor who transmits the vows is not found, then in the past, the venerable Mañjuśrī transformed into Ambarāja, which in Tibetan is called King Sky, how did he generate the supreme mind of enlightenment? Just as it is said in the Ornament Sutra of the Buddha-field of the noble Mañjuśrī himself, the way to generate the mind of enlightenment, in the same way, the ritual of accepting entry with one's own intention before the Buddhas of the ten directions is clearly written in this treatise. As Sharawa Chenpo said: Previously, the noble Mañjuśrī was born as King Sky in the land of Amba, or it is also possible that Amba is the Indian word for sky. For hundreds of thousands of years, he begged for alms from the Tathagata Dragon Sound King and his retinue, and also offered wealth, and then practiced in a solitary place, did great roots of virtue, and when he wanted to dedicate these roots of virtue to the gods and other beings, a deity came from the sky and said, do not dedicate them to inferior beings, but dedicate them to perfect enlightenment. Then he made a vow before that Tathagata, and acted in this way. Thirdly, how is the actual ritual explained in the sutra? In the presence of the protectors, generate the perfect mind of enlightenment, treat all beings as guests, and liberate them from samsara. Anger and wrath, stinginess and jealousy, from now until the attainment of enlightenment, should not be done. One should practice celibacy, one should abandon sins and desires. Precepts
