Regarding the sections on conduct and its precepts, and entering (the path) and its precepts, the first is the section on aspiration. It includes: the preliminary ritual, which is special refuge; the main practice, which is the aspiration itself, vowing to the result; and the subsequent explanation of the precepts. The first of these three is: Before the complete Buddha's painted image, etc., and stupas, and the sacred Dharma, offer flowers, incense, and other objects, to the best of your ability. Also, the seven types of offerings mentioned in the 'Samantabhadra's Conduct Prayer,' until the ultimate attainment of the heart of enlightenment, with an unwavering mind, have great faith in the Three Jewels, kneel down, join your palms, and first recite the refuge three times. Thus it is said. That is to say, as previously shown, regarding the basis for practice, which is the nature of the three types of individuals, through diligent practice, those faithful ones who wish to attain the supreme enlightenment of all-knowing wisdom for the benefit of others, having reached the level of a great individual's mind, in order to attain this result, when performing the fundamental aspiration ritual as a means, the indispensable basis is: the teacher, the true and complete Buddha Shakyamuni's painted image, or other Buddha images made by sculpture or casting, as well as stupas, which are relic stupas or stupas with the essence of the Dharmadhatu relic, and the excellent sacred Dharma, which are the vast collections of the Tripitaka scriptures, and also, although not explicitly recorded in the scriptures, but obtained from oral instructions, the images of the noble Bodhisattvas, the irreversible Sangha, whatever can be invited should be properly enshrined. Direct these towards yourself, regard the actually enshrined objects as the true embodiment of the Buddha, stupa, Dharma, and Sangha, and regard all sentient beings in the ten directions as objects of faith. First, prostrate and worship, and then offer flowers and incense, etc., as actual offerings. From the actual mention of flowers and incense, it can be inferred that lamps, perfumes, food, and other offerings should also be offered, to the best of one's ability, without holding back. Furthermore, practice the seven types of belief and understanding offerings transformed by the mind, as mentioned in the 'Samantabhadra's Conduct Prayer.'

After making preparations, the object of refuge, the difference in time is until the ultimate essence of Bodhicitta, and in the difference of motivation, with the power of intense compassion that cannot bear other sentient beings being tormented by suffering, with the mind that is unshakable by any circumstances, wanting to liberate those sentient beings from suffering. The object or basis of refuge, the Buddha and Dharma of the Three Jewels, here also has no difference from the common ground, but in terms of the Sangha, here there is the distinction of "non-returning Bodhisattva Sangha," and for each of these great qualities, one deeply believes by recalling them. Physical conduct: Kneeling on the ground, with palms joined. The main practice is the excellence of generating Bodhicitta, which is the first, the preliminary ritual, reciting the refuge formula, following the teacher and reciting it three times, which is to take special refuge. Regarding this, Potowa said: The vows of a layperson and a novice are obtained from the teacher, the vows of a monk are obtained from the Sangha, and the two aspects of a Bodhisattva's aspiration and practice are obtained from accumulating merit, this is what he often said. Sometimes it is also said that they are obtained from both intention and action. Sharawa said: It is not that a teacher is not needed, it is also necessary to become someone who has the Mahayana lineage, as mentioned before. Encountering a true teacher, and all those who have become of the Mahayana lineage, all arise from accumulating merit, so that is the real meaning. In short, from many lifetimes ago, relying on a virtuous friend of the Mahayana, cultivating the mind with the three levels of beings, and accumulating immeasurable merit, therefore the Mahayana lineage is fully awakened. Here, also, being protected by the virtuous friend, cultivating loving-kindness and compassion, therefore the seed of compassion is fully awakened, and through actions accumulating vast amounts of merit, therefore both of these become perfect. Because the virtuous friend is in accordance with the Dharma, and gives the ritual in accordance with the Dharma, that is why it arises. When Potowa was staying in Radreng Monastery (established in 1075), once someone said, "Now generate the mind..."
