The characteristics mentioned in the Mahayana Dharma. In the 'Twenty Verses on Discipline,' it says, 'The lama who abides in discipline and is skilled, endowed with ability, should be relied upon.' Or, from 'Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds,' 'One should always rely on a virtuous friend, who is skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle, whose bodhisattva conduct is supreme, and who does not abandon it even for the sake of life.' Or, as this very text states, one should be a bodhisattva who dwells in the state of a bodhisattva and is qualified to bestow these vows. To be a Vajrayana lama, there is the saying, 'The lama is equal to all Buddhas.' Or, in the 'Vajra Dakini Tantra,' it says, 'The teacher has abandoned worldly dharmas, is supremely intelligent in these ten qualities, knows the union of mantra and tantra, is skilled in the work of drawing mandalas, one should know him as the teacher.' One needs a Vajra Acharya who possesses the characteristics mentioned like these. Especially when seeking the essential instructions for meditation, it is impossible without a reliable source. Even to encounter a reliable source, one needs to accumulate merit. If one has not accumulated merit, as soon as some seemingly devout followers appear, they follow some yogis. Whether the yogi is in the form of a monk or has hair, they cannot be distinguished from the Brahmin of Mitra. Now, when seeking teachings from all these people who have taken many names such as 'Subren,' one needs someone whom the disciple cannot measure in all aspects. If one seeks teachings from someone whom the disciple can measure, it is of no use. It is said that one should not attribute the faults of a person to the Dharma, but nowadays it seems to be the opposite. It seems that people do not understand the need for a reliable source. It is said that those who are in the presence of Putowa do not consider his words to be reliable, but instead refute him with various titles. Because they consider Geshe Tonpa to be reliable, they always use examples such as 'My father's mantra was to eat dog meat, I don't understand anything about the Kadampa, Apa said that Riwoche Mountain is Machen Pomra.' They always say, 'I don't understand anything, that old lay practitioner just said that, that voice is so nice, someone like him can help me.' There is no use for someone who is always refuting the teacher. The blacksmith of Kham...

It is said that a son should learn from his father like a calf following its mother. The third benefit is that it is helpful for translation. In Indian language, what is called Bodhi (Tibetan: བོ་དྷི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: बोध, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: bodhi, literal Chinese meaning: Bodhi) is translated into Tibetan as "བྱང་ཆུབ". Pathalam (Tibetan: པཱ་ཐ་ལམ་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Roman transliteration:, literal Chinese meaning:) of, Pradipa (Tibetan: པྲ་དཱི་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Roman transliteration:, literal Chinese meaning:) is translated as "lamp". To this, Sharawa said that in the past there were more than twenty ministers and translators. Listening to the Pandit explaining Indian scriptures, even if you only understand a little, it is very helpful. Considering this, Geshe Dromtonpa also said that for all grains and grapes, there is a name for it in Indian writing, and that meaning is this. He had a disciple named Sangba, who said something that could not be expressed in Tibetan. Putowa said that at first it seemed like he was saying something vague, but later he said it that way, and the meaning became clear, and he felt very grateful, and then he ran away. Kawa and Nyangpo Darma Bodhi and others, by doing "Vivaradha" (Tibetan: བི་ཝརྡྷ་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Roman transliteration:, literal Chinese meaning:) to all the things written in Indian language on paper, the translators also knew a lot. It is said that Guru Lotsawa only did "Vivaradha" (Tibetan: བི་ཝརྡྷ་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Roman transliteration:, literal Chinese meaning:) to these, and therefore he understood translation. Now we do not have such benefits, and to achieve omniscience, it is not possible with our ghost-like language. In the future, we must encounter the Buddha's teachings. Now that we have planted the seeds, in the future we will obtain a human body with leisure and endowments, complete with precepts and faith in the Mahayana Dharma. If we encounter the Buddha's teachings, it will become a cause for easy translation and also a condition for encountering them. If so, the Buddha taught the Dharma in all languages, just as it is said in the "Samantabhadra's Prayer", isn't it? Generally, it is like that, but when teaching the Mahayana Dharma, it can only be taught in Sanskrit. When explaining the path of seeing, which is the basis for understanding the Prajnaparamita, it is said: In the future, the Blessed One Maitreya will also be in this place, using these names, words, and letters to explain the Prajnaparamita, and all the Buddhas of the Good Aeon will be the same. All the Buddhas of the ten directions also use these names and so on to explain the Prajnaparamita, and these will appear in the minds of those gods. Geshe Dromtonpa said: Dombhibi gave to Naropa.
