It is said that Bu Rab said, "If one has such wisdom, one should generate Bodhicitta, etc." As Gongmowa said to all the elders, in order to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara, one must attain the state of Buddhahood oneself. The cause of that is Bodhicitta. That comes from compassion, that comes from loving-kindness, that comes from knowing and repaying kindness, that comes from recognizing all sentient beings as mothers. Therefore, all of these should be gradually cultivated through mothers. Moreover, this is also cultivating the nature of reality, not conceptual constructs, as Jo bo (referring to Atiśa) said. In the Sutra of Beginningless Samsara, it is said that each sentient being has been each other's mother, and the number is even greater than counting with points as big as juniper berries on the great earth. Fathers, etc., are also the same. That sutra has not been translated into Tibetan. The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra contains all these meanings. After becoming close like this, one should also cultivate how great the kindness of the mother is. From the root of knowing and repaying kindness, cultivate loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. Moreover, this is through the oral instructions transmitted from Guru Serlingpa, it is easy to generate loving-kindness, and cultivate gradually. Therefore, first starting from the root mother, gradually expand the object and cultivate. First, think like this: This own mother, initially when I was just born, like a worm, unable to support my own neck, unable to move up and down, and unable to reach my hands and feet, but she raised me to be as big as a great yak, and showed me the beautiful Jambudvipa. Then, just like coming out of a hermit's hut or coming out of a snake's skin, she gave everything to the child, and the mother herself curled up like a gatehouse. Thinking of this, generate a mind that cherishes the mother. Similarly, all sentient beings have also been one's own mother, and have raised oneself in this way. Fathers, etc., have also protected oneself from various harms, and have raised oneself with various benefits. Remember their kindness, and generate a mind that cherishes them. Cultivating loving-kindness in this way, because sentient beings who desire happiness are filled with immeasurable suffering in samsara, measuring from one's own experience, cultivate compassion in the way of "I cannot bear the suffering of others." Moreover, this is the Mahayana.

Among many sutras, the statements that establish this in various ways are: In the "Noble Manjushri Ocean Sutra," it says: When a beloved only son of a householder falls into a pit of impurity, his mother and all other relatives cannot bear it, beating their chests and wailing, circling around the pit, but they themselves cannot enter the pit to pull him out. The father, however, does not weep or anything like that, but enters the pit and pulls out the son. Similarly, for the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, although they have some intolerance for sentient beings dwelling in the impure pit of samsara, they themselves cannot abide in samsara to benefit sentient beings. Bodhisattvas or those who have become of the Mahayana lineage, although they know samsara as an impure pit, due to the unbearable compassion for sentient beings, like beloved only sons, dwelling in the impure pit of samsara, they abide in samsara to benefit sentient beings. Also, in the chapter "The Old Man Who Lost His Son," it says: A father and son wandered in a desolate wilderness. The father found the path and one foot had already entered his own doorway. Just as he was about to step in with the other foot, he remembered his son and returned to the wilderness to search for him. Similarly, knowing all conditioned phenomena to be like a desolate wilderness, he developed a mind of renunciation. When he was about to achieve his own liberation, with one foot already inside the door, at that time, due to the unbearable sight of sentient beings, like sons, wandering in the samsaric wilderness, he entered the samsaric wilderness to benefit sentient beings. Also, in the chapter "The House on Fire Blown by the Wind," it says: Having escaped from a house on fire blown by the wind, one foot has already come out. Now, just as he was about to step out with the other foot to attain liberation, he remembered his wife and children left behind and returned to that house to rescue them. Similarly, knowing all conditioned phenomena to be like a house on fire blown by the wind, he developed a mind of renunciation. When he was about to achieve his own liberation, with one foot already out, at that time, due to the unbearable compassion for sentient beings, like wife and children, suffering in the samsaric house on fire blown by the wind, he returned to that samsara to benefit sentien
