That's all. One cannot abandon the moment and the subtle particles. This is called the middling person, it is said. Therefore, regarding the nature of the middling person, teaching in the manner of the four truths, Dengmawa said: Regarding the four truths, there are two orders: the order of explanation and the order of realization. According to the explanation, suffering should be known, the origin should be abandoned, cessation should be realized, and the path should be relied upon in the continuum. According to the realization, just as when a sick person is afflicted by illness, he relies on a skilled doctor, the doctor first diagnoses the illness, then prepares medicine that is beneficial for that illness, and through the medicine, the illness is cured, and happiness naturally arises. Similarly, when a person who understands that all of samsara is suffering relies on a lama, he then ascertains that the cause of suffering is the truth of the origin. In order to abandon it, he practices the antidote path—the three trainings—thereby completely separating from the suffering of the three realms, which is the truth of cessation. This is the order of realization, it is said. Furthermore, generally, those with the potential are placed in the three enlightenments, and those without the potential are placed in gods and humans. As it is said, although it seems that those with the potential who cannot be led to the supreme person are placed on their respective paths, in reality, in their own essence, the lesser and middling persons are also taught for the purpose of leading to the supreme person. Therefore, Sharawa said: Here, the path of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers is not taught, but rather it is the key instruction for gradually leading to the Great Vehicle. To this, some say that the lesser and middling persons are to be abandoned or discarded by the great. Why is that? Because the lesser, even if previously attained, is deceived again and again, and the middling is contradictory to the great person. It is said that there is such a statement, but it is not the intention of Jowo, it is said. Then, if it is not so, the lesser and middling persons are like the branches or roots of the supreme. The lower path is a branch of the higher path, it is said. In this regard, Khenpo Paldenpa, during this time, teaches a key instruction called "the cycle of the three persons." What is that? The realization of the lesser person is that, because of fearing the three lower realms, he abandons the causes of non-virtue, which is indispensable as a basis for the two higher persons, therefore it is not to be abandoned. Then, is there no difference at all? If one thinks that just that is enough, then that mind is to be abandoned. The middling and the great

The two are not entirely contradictory either. The realization in the intermediate stage that all of samsara is suffering is itself a part of the great stage. Without it, the mind of the great stage cannot be generated. Therefore, know that the mind of the great stage also arises dependent on it. Just because samsara has no beginning and no end, I have also wandered in samsara. Therefore, there is not a single sentient being who has not been one's own mother. Having been one's mother, and having bestowed benefits in turn, it would be good if those extremely kind old mothers had happiness, but they do not have happiness, and they suffer in the very place where they suffer. Knowing the faults of samsara also leads to knowing the object of compassion. Supotowa said that if one does not have the realization of the intermediate stage, and sees one's own samsara as a place of happiness, yet wants to liberate sentient beings, what else is that but an enemy? Therefore, there is no reason to generate compassion for sentient beings who are in a place of happiness. If one does not have the perception of sentient beings as mothers, the mind that cannot bear their suffering will not arise. Relying on knowing that samsara is suffering and perceiving sentient beings as mothers, by comparing oneself to others, intolerance arises towards the suffering of others. Just as it arises like, "How I am, know that all sentient beings are the same," therefore, the mind of the great stage completely depends on the realization of the small and intermediate stages. Therefore, although the actual path is that of the great person, its root is the two, the small and the intermediate. Those holy individuals of the Jowo's lineage of precepts made the Dharma of the small and intermediate stages like the root of the Dharma, therefore, the firm conviction that the Dharma is true and certain arises, and this is the key point. In this way, when one's own mind turns away from all existence, and a genuine intention to abandon its cause arises, then one is truly led to train the mind in the one vehicle. Sharawa also said: It is impossible to have ultimate liberation from samsara without attaining Buddhahood. Because the characteristic of what is to be realized is only one. If the realization of that is not perfected, and one is still attached to things as real, there is no ultimate liberation. And only the Buddha has perfected realization. Saying that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers also have liberation is like not being able to say that one has reached a wealthy place without reaching the edge of the cliff. If one does not temporarily lead them into those paths, one cannot enter the Great Vehicle.
