Or attaining supernatural powers, or attaining the eight great siddhis, or attaining the five mundane abhijñās, one has been deceived countless times. Even if one attains them now, one will still be deceived. Obtaining a human birth is most difficult, yet one is still reborn as a human again and again. If one were to pile up the bones of those who have died, it would be higher than the king of mountains. If one were to accumulate blood, it would be more than the four great oceans. If one were to accumulate the mother's milk one has drunk and the tears shed by friends weeping after one's death, one has already passed through so much deception. Thus, in the happy realms, one only seeks a little, while the three lower realms are like a permanent home. The three lower realms themselves are like a permanent home, occupied by hell. If one does not achieve liberation, one should know that one still needs to do this. Is there no difference between the peak of existence and the Avīci hell? One should also meditate on being in the copper pot of the Avīci hell. By meditating in this way, certainty arises, and one knows that saṃsāra is like a terrible prison, etc., and as previously explained, is not a place to dwell. Therefore, one must engage in abandoning its cause, the origin of suffering (samudaya). There are two types of origin of suffering: the origin of karma and the origin of afflictions. On top of the ignorance that is inherently ignorant of suchness, there is also the ignorance that is ignorant of karma and its results, as well as the craving that desires happiness and does not desire suffering, and the three non-virtuous karmas, from which the suffering of the three lower realms arises. The ignorance that is ignorant of suchness, craving, and the three virtuous karmas accomplish the bodies of gods and humans in the desire realm. The ignorance that is ignorant of suchness, the unwavering karma, the samādhi devoid of wisdom, and the three afflictions that cling to joy and happiness accomplish the gods of the form and formless realms. All that has been said is the origin of suffering, the cause of suffering. Thus, from the origin of karma, the two virtuous karmas and the unwavering karma also appear to be the cause of generating saṃsāra, so should they be abandoned? The lower-seat master said: In the causal stage, do not abandon virtuous karma; in the resultant stage, do not abandon the leisure and endowment of the human and divine body. So what should be abandoned? Abandon the ignorance that is ignorant of suchness and the craving for pleasure and pain. The virtuous karma is practiced with the wisdom that knows the four noble truths as an assistant, so it will enter the study of the precepts of the Lesser Vehicle. That

In the stage of cause, do not abandon unwavering karma. In the stage of result, do not abandon the samadhi of the higher realms. What should be abandoned? Abandon ignorance that is deluded about Suchness and afflictions that cling to joy and pleasure. When unwavering karma is practiced with the help of wisdom that understands the Four Noble Truths, it becomes the higher training in mind of the Lesser Vehicle. When virtuous karma and the samadhi of abiding in the mind are accompanied by emptiness and compassion, they also become the discipline and higher training in mind of the Great Vehicle, respectively. Shara also said: Abandoning the ten non-virtues and measuring them with the ten virtues, one can attain the state of gods and humans. By cultivating the Four Noble Truths and dependent origination with skillful means and wisdom, one can attain the three liberations. Therefore, just as it is said, why not cultivate similar practices with skillful means and wisdom? The cause of generating samsara is karma, and the condition is afflictions. From the stage of the small person, abandon non-virtuous karma. When virtuous and unwavering karma are practiced as the higher trainings in discipline and mind with the strength of companionship, they will not remain merely as karma that generates the happiness of samsara, but will be transformed into the path of liberation, thereby distinguishing the beginning and end of karma and the path. The arising of afflictions is to be abandoned, because without afflictions, even if there is karma, one cannot take rebirth, just like barley in a mold. Although the mind-streams of the noble Arhats have a little karma, they do not take rebirth because they have no afflictions. If there are afflictions, they first create karma, then increase karma in the middle, and finally also combine the continuum of rebirth in the six realms with afflictions. Therefore, if there are afflictions, there is the suffering of samsara; if there are no afflictions, there is no suffering of samsara. Therefore, these afflictions have caused suffering in beginningless samsara in the past, are now placed on top of suffering, and will continue to be associated with suffering endlessly in the future. Therefore, one must generate the perception of afflictions as enemies and abandon them. If one recognizes afflictions as enemies, even if one cannot abandon them immediately, one should enter into the cause of abandoning them, so that one will inevitably abandon them someday, which is a lower-level statement. So, how many afflictions should be abandoned? Desire
