One should strive to practice the path of the three types of individuals, as it is said. First, one must understand suffering, and in order to abandon the cause of suffering—the origin, one must rely on the path—the three trainings, and cultivate them in one's own mindstream, thereby realizing cessation. This is how one practices through the means of the four noble truths. To understand suffering, as explained above, by practicing the characteristics of the lesser individual, one develops faith in karma and its effects, abandons evil deeds, and engages in virtuous actions. In this way, one independently attains a good rebirth. However, even a good rebirth is a basis for achieving liberation. No matter where one is born in samsara, there is no happiness free from suffering. As Sharawa said, even if one only attains a good rebirth, there is no happiness free from suffering. Even when born as a human, one is constantly tormented by the eight sufferings, such as birth. First, the suffering of birth: for those who have not accumulated merit, when their consciousness in the intermediate state enters the mother's womb, they experience the sensation of entering darkness, dense fog, a thick thorn forest, or falling into a ravine. For those who have accumulated merit, they experience the sensation of being in a tall building or ascending into a magnificent palace. Then, the union of the parents' essence and the consciousness of the intermediate state forms a sprout of name and form. This sprout gradually changes every seven days, starting from a gelatinous state, and when the five senses develop, one experiences the suffering of being tightly bound by iron chains and wooden yokes, and being pierced by sharp wooden stakes. The place of dwelling is below undigested food, above digested food, in the midst of impurity. As Sharawa said: No matter how much one desires pleasure now, if one stays in the mother's womb for one night and then comes out, even giving away one tael of gold will be of no use. However, one must stay there no matter what. As it is said in the message to the disciple: "One sees only to experience suffering closely." Thus it is said. Then, upon being born, one also experiences the suffering of being pricked by thorny iron instruments or rubbed by rough stones. After that, the states of childhood, youth, and adulthood gradually pass away. Second is the suffering of old age, which is the suffering of losing one's beautiful complexion.

And also, the suffering of destroying perfect form, the suffering of destroying perfect strength, the suffering of enjoying objects with weakened senses, the suffering of decline, that is, the suffering of old age is manifestly established. To this, in the presence of the (teacher's) face, it was said: If the suffering of old age does not occur gradually, but occurs all at once, there is no one who does not vomit blood and die. In all the periods from birth to not being old, the third is called the suffering of illness. From the crown of one's head to the soles of one's feet, there is not even a fingernail's worth of space that does not hurt. When one is afflicted with a serious illness, on top of the suffering of the illness itself, one must abstain from unsuitable food and drink, even if it is delicious. One must eat all the medicines that taste bitter and smell unpleasant. One must endure surgery, moxibustion, and all kinds of harsh treatments. One cannot live freely and unrestrainedly, and there are many sufferings such as taking care of the sick and disputes between two people. Other than these, if one is dominated by the four sufferings such as encountering unpleasant things, there are also the sufferings of changing seasons, the sufferings of hunger and thirst and fainting, etc. In short, all the unpleasant objects of the six senses are encountering unpleasant things. Separating from parents, friends, Khenpos (abbots) and teachers, and material possessions is separating from pleasant things, but separating from those things is also encountering unpleasant things. Encountering those unpleasant things above is also separating from pleasant things. Therefore, many forms of suffering arise depending on those things. The suffering of not being able to find something that does not exist even if you search for it. Even if one is born as a human being, if one has not accumulated merit, some are born at the door and die at the door and by the garbage heap. Some become poor, wearing ragged clothes, with no difference between hunger and thirst and pretas. In the lineage of birth, poverty has no hope and no result, one has nothing to say to one's own people, and one cannot enjoy happiness even on festive days. Alas, even the words of generosity are few. It is said that it will come as it is said. Some have wealth in the first half of their lives, but in the second half their enjoyment declines, and they have to take their children and beg by the garbage heap. If one is rich, one also suffers from not being able to sustain life with wealth.
