It is said that this is a pith instruction. When a woman requested the Dharma, (the teacher) said: The root of the Dharma is that it is very important not to be reborn in the three lower realms in the future. Being born in the three lower realms is not because of committing great sins, but because of not avoiding small sins. Committing great sins will cause the suffering of the three lower realms to be intense and prolonged, while committing small sins will only cause small or short-term suffering in the three lower realms. Therefore, one should always be vigilant and afraid of the arising of evil and unwholesome things in one's mind. Doing so is because the great Geshe Potowa, when he was in Yorpodarso (place name), even avoided sins out of doubt, thereby obtaining a support for a good rebirth, experiencing about a hundred short lives. During that time, by practicing short-term karmic results, if a genuine conviction arises that happiness and suffering are definitely the result of karma, then this matter is not small either. As it is said, the greatness of karma and its result depends solely on thought. Sharawa himself also said that happiness and suffering arise from good and non-good deeds, just as we now experience benefits and harms from consuming suitable and unsuitable food and medicine. For children of the same parents, some have good looks, and some have bad looks. Similarly, size, intelligence, strength, and even when the shares are equally divided, some become impoverished due to lack of resources, while others become wealthy and prosperous, and so on. All of these can be slightly inferred based on the scriptures. Therefore, one should think from various perspectives and thereby have faith in the greatness of karma and its result. Like this, abandoning the cause of bad rebirths and accomplishing the cause of good rebirths, Geshe himself said: Because of having faith in the greatness of karma and its result, one turns away from sins and abides in the path of the ten virtuous actions, which is called ethics. He said that this, accompanied by generosity and patience, can obtain the good rebirth of the desire realm. Without generosity and patience, even if one obtains a good rebirth by ethics alone, one will not obtain the happiness of enjoyment and good looks, so there will be no happiness of samsara. To obtain the happiness of samsara, these three causes must be complete. Then, regarding its distinction, a person with seven qualities, or oneself and others.

If you want to obtain the ten perfections or possess the four wheels, then you should diligently work on the causes mentioned earlier. That is, in terms of the seven qualities, first, the cause of obtaining great wealth is to mainly abandon taking what is not given and practice generosity. Second, the cause of obtaining good health is to abandon beating and scolding sentient beings, and to give medicine and suitable food to the sick. Third, the cause of obtaining a beautiful form is to cultivate patience in the three aspects of outer, inner, and intermediate, to give new clothes as charity, and to offer lamps and precious ornaments to the images of the Buddhas and the Three Jewels. Fourth, the cause of obtaining great glory is to generate the thought of wishing all sentient beings happiness and well-being, and to offer cool places and trees to the Sangha. Fifth, the cause of obtaining a noble birth is to abandon pride, to respect all holy beings, and to generate faith and respect towards all beings. Sixth, the cause of obtaining great wisdom is to listen extensively to the Dharma, to give paper, ink, needles, and thread as charity, and to make good covers for books and protective boards for scriptures, which are also causes of great wisdom, so all these should be diligently practiced. Seventh, the cause of obtaining long life is to abandon killing, to engage in rescuing lives, and if you see ants and other creatures living on land falling into the water, rescue them as much as possible. If there is an opportunity to ransom lives, do so to the best of your ability. As སྣེའུ་ཟུར་བའི་ཞལ་ནས said, whether male or female, wise or foolish, none of these seven are unimportant, and one is more important than the other. Therefore, you should know the cause and effect of all these and diligently train in the causes. Similarly, as it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Living in a harmonious place, relying on a superior person, vowing to do good yourself, and having accumulated merit in the past, you possess the four great wheels." The possession of the four wheels mentioned here actually includes the ten perfections of oneself and others. In short, when Sharawa asked a practitioner about the Dharma, the practitioner said in a straightforward manner, even if you now engage in nine activities, such as intellectually questioning the Buddha, the bottom line is that after this life, you must obtain a support that can accomplish the leisure and endowments of the four wheels. If you do not obtain this, what is the use of anything else?
