It is also recorded that greed is said to be the cause of falling into the Vajra Hell. Sharawa said: The common cause for ordinary people in temples and ordained people to fall into the hell of burning fire is the current infighting within families. If sectarian conflicts occur, according to the "Manjushri Root Tantra": Whether it is plundering, or seizing land, or doing both, even if birds die on that land, they will be reborn in Avici Hell. Regarding the specific causes of being born as a hungry ghost, Master Nagarjuna said: Thus, the hungry ghosts, obtain various, sufferings of a single taste, what is the cause? It is due to the miserly, the Buddha said not giving. As the scripture says, being fond of stinginess, obstructing others from giving alms, and being stingy with one's own enjoyment, as well as plundering the livelihoods of special areas, taking away the property of the Sangha without giving it, robbing the Sangha's gathering place, damaging the essence of the Sangha's food, giving rotten food that one does not eat to others, changing offerings, etc., these are all causes of being born as a hungry ghost. If one does not abandon these, even if one enters the gate of the Great Vehicle Secret Mantra and possesses subtle samadhi, one cannot block the path to being born as a hungry ghost, just like the story of the yogi who slays Yama. That is to say, a yogi who slays Yama, who is able to visualize a three-faced, six-armed image in a mustard seed, thought that he possessed such samadhi, so subtle karma would not harm him, so he enjoyed the grain residue harvested by the Sangha without permission, and was therefore reborn as a hungry ghost, residing in the alms bowl of a practitioner in a certain monastery. Once, that practitioner went to another village for a few days, and when he returned to the monastery and sat on his bed, a three-faced, six-armed figure appeared in front of him and said that he was hungry during his absence, so he should give him food quickly. When asked about the reason, he said that the workings of karma are inconceivable. I am a yogi who slays Yama and has attained subtle samadhi, but I used the Sangha's grain residue.

Because of enjoying without giving, one is born as a preta. Because you have a little bodhicitta, the torma you offered has helped me, so now, because of hunger, quickly give me torma. It is said that this is a teaching of Lord Atisha. The specific causes for being born as an animal are: not relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, not listening to the sacred Dharma, and even if encountering the objects of the Three Jewels, not generating faith in them. It is also said that even small verbal misconduct can be a cause for being born as an animal. In the past, in the teachings of Buddha Kashyapa, a student of a khenpo said that the khenpo looked like a monkey, so for five hundred lifetimes he was born as a monkey. One bhikshuni said to another bhikshuni that she was like a female dog, so for five hundred lifetimes she was born as a dog. Furthermore, dying of thirst leads to being born as an aquatic animal. Impure vows, impure aspirations, and using the property of the Sangha are said to lead to being born as a naga. In short, the result of the maturation of non-virtuous actions, as mentioned before, leads to falling into any of the lower realms. Therefore, it is said in the Ratnavali: 'For a human, this result, the first of all, is falling into the lower realms.' It is said. Then, even if one in a hundred is born as a human, there is still the result that is similar to the cause. It is said in the sutra: 'The result similar to the cause of killing, even if one in a hundred is born as a human, two fully ripened results will manifest, namely, short life and many illnesses.' And so on, for each of the ten non-virtuous actions, two results are mentioned. All of these were summarized by the teacher Nagarjuna in the Ratnavali: Killing leads to short life, harming leads to many harms, stealing leads to poverty of wealth, adultery leads to many enemies, lying leads to slander, divisive speech leads to separation from friends, harsh speech leads to hearing unpleasant sounds, idle talk leads to powerless words, greed destroys hope in the mind, harmful intent is said to bestow fear, wrong view leads to evil views, drinking alcohol leads to confusion of mind, taking what is not given leads to poverty, wrong livelihood leads to being deceived, pride leads to low birth, jealousy leads to diminished glory.
