Here, if someone doesn't understand, yet claims to have a higher Dharma, it's like someone pretending to have a mental illness, yet wanting the doctor to give him butter, saying there's moxibustion. Claiming to be Mahayana when not Mahayana, like a donkey wearing a lion's skin, sentient beings will go to the great hell, just as it is said. If one understands this, then all the Dharmas above this will naturally come. If one doesn't grasp the key point here, one cannot overcome difficulties or cross obstacles. It's like Jowo (Atisha) said, "Spa Gom Kun (a translator) said that Kharsarpani (a logician) revealed it to me." When he saw the Sutra of Father and Son Meeting, he seemed to have realized the profound meaning. It's like fighting without thinking about impermanence, and using humanity as an excuse when it doesn't conform to humanity. If one understands impermanence, and grasps the key point here, one can overcome difficulties and cross obstacles like Geshe Nyenton. Therefore, the Bhagavan also didn't tell King Clear, the best of patrons, friends, and disciples, the oral instructions of combining with the deity, but started with impermanence. He said, "Great King, four great mountains come from the four directions," and so on. Then he said, "Great King, similarly, four great mountains of aging, sickness, decay, and death come. For these, whether one escapes quickly, or uses the power of a strong man and a lion, or uses substances, mantras, and medicine to prevent them, it is not easy. Among them, aging destroys youth and comes, sickness destroys health and comes, decay destroys all perfections and comes, death destroys life and comes." And he said, "At the time of death, the mouth and nose will be crooked, the teeth will be clenched, and one will beg for alms," and so on. At that time, the consciousness belonging to this life will stop here, and the consciousness of the next life, like a spark, will either be like a kite with a broken string, or like escaping from a bird's net, or like a bee with its eyes gouged out, leaving this body like earth and stone. Whether it is cremated, water burial, or given to birds and dogs, it is useless. When life is exhausted and warmth dissipates, when consciousness abandons this body, it is like a piece of wood.

Will fall asleep. As it is said, this body is left like earth, stones, and tree stumps before departing. At that time, if time urges, even the king will depart, and enjoyments, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever sentient beings go, karma follows like dirt. As it is said, all evil deeds done will be met with bad omens in this very life, and also in the bardo. In extremely deep and distant places, separated by a fathom, on dangerous paths covered with sharp thorns, the messengers of the Lord of Death bind the neck with the noose of time, and fierce ones drive and lead with clubs. As it is said, various bad omens will appear. Therefore, Geshe Potowa said, just as it is said, "There is a way to do things before it is taken away," it is very important to strive now so that such bad omens do not appear at the time of our death. So, what is the cause of that? It is to enter the inner Buddhist path and cultivate faith by meditating on the greatness of the interdependent origination of cause and effect in its teachings. First of all, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "In the place of a person with severed limbs, even being led today is terrified, with signs such as dry mouth and squinting eyes appearing different from before. If the messenger of the Lord of Death is seized by a terrifying figure, what need is there to say about being afflicted by a great and terrifying disease and being extremely weak? Who can save me from this fear? Thus, with terrified eyes wide open, one seeks refuge in all four directions. Seeing that there is no refuge in those four directions, one then becomes completely disillusioned. If there is no refuge in that place, then what shall I do?" Think in this way. Therefore, take refuge from this day forth in the Victorious One, the Protector of Beings, who strives to save beings, who has great power and eliminates all fears. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, or as Sharawa said, "Meditating on the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha is the greatest teaching." The teacher said in the Ratnavali: "Freed from all faults, adorned with all virtues, the only friend of all sentient beings, all
