Homage to the wise! Or, as it is said in the "Praise of the Supreme God," "In him who has no faults, in him who possesses immeasurable virtues, in him who is all-knowing and compassionate, I take refuge." Thus, by meditating on the greatness of the refuge, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, when faith arises in them, as previously shown, it is the time to generate the common refuge. Therefore, take that, learn what should be learned, and become an inner Buddhist. Once you become an inner Buddhist, the Buddha you have taken refuge in will protect you. Therefore, meditate on the greatness of karma and its results, which are the root of Dharma. Moreover, as previously shown, due to the key of impermanence, this life will not remain, and death is certain. After death, as the materialist heretics believe, it will not be cut off and become completely non-existent, but will be reborn again. This rebirth is not the transference of this aggregate to another place. It does not arise from the causelessness and conditionlessness that the outsiders believe in. It does not arise from the unfavorable causes created by other beings such as Ishvara. It does not arise from arbitrary causes that occur as one wishes. So, from what does it arise? As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend," "Aggregates are not born from randomness, not from time, not from nature, not from essence, not from Ishvara, not from causelessness, O wise one, they arise from ignorance, karma, and craving." Thus, it arises from the power of one's own karma and afflictions. Therefore, whatever white or black causes are accumulated, the results of happiness and suffering will arise. Therefore, understand that happiness and suffering are the results of karma. From the smallest of karmas, one must carefully engage in acceptance and rejection. Faith in karma and its results also arises from meditation, not just from hearing or occasionally thinking about it, so one must meditate. One needs to understand this. One needs to hear about this. Therefore, this is the key instruction of the guru. Through reading many sutras and treatises, understanding the acceptance and rejection of cause and effect, based on prior hearing and thinking, first, by merely contemplating the ripening results of non-virtuous actions, when a mind of fear arises regarding its suffering and lifespan, initially, the thought of abandoning the cause will arise. Therefore, first, one must meditate on the faults of the results. Moreover, regarding death in this life,

There is nothing more frightening than that. As Putowa said, birth is more frightening than death. Among births, if one is born into the lower realms, there is nothing more frightening than that. Therefore, one should summarize its suffering and meditate on it from the greatest to the smallest. If we consider the suffering of sentient beings in hell, Sharawa said in his letter to a friend: "If here, in this life, one is fiercely struck by three hundred short spears in a single day, what suffering would that be? Compared to even the smallest suffering of hell, one cannot even mention it, let alone endure it." As he said, human suffering cannot exceed that limit, and even that cannot compare to the smallest suffering of hell. If a single spark falls on our raw flesh now, or if a single ember falls on our flesh, how much heat would we feel! The Sutra on Mindfulness says that compared to the fire of hell, human fire is as cool as snow or clouds. Putowa said that if a person is burned completely in fire, applying a bit of sandalwood or Gorśirṣa paste to any part of the body would bring a moment of coolness. Similarly, being burned in the fire of hell, if human fire touches any part, there would be a slight feeling of coolness; that is the heat of the fire of hell. Likewise, one must meditate in detail on all the sufferings and lifespans of all eighteen hell realms. Generally, the location of hell is from the fifteenth level below the earth to thirty-two thousand yojanas below Jambudvipa (the continent where we live), where the first hot hell, the Reviving Hell, is said to be located. In the Abhidharmakośa it says: "Twenty thousand yojanas below this is the Avīci Hell, and it is the same distance. Above it are seven hells." This means that twenty thousand yojanas below Jambudvipa is the lowest hot hell, the Avīci Hell. According to the former explanation, there are four thousand yojanas from the Reviving Hell to the other hells. To the north of that, beyond ten thousand yojanas, are the cold hells, and some are also said to be on the seashore and other places. The surrounding hells, according to the Abhidharmakośa, are that each of the hot hells has four charnel pits, etc., on each side, totaling sixteen. The Sutra on Mindfulness says that there are also sixteen additional hells and many other different places.
