Even the flesh and bones born from where will decay and separate, what need is there to mention other affections? As it is said, even this body, which has come together with one's own consciousness and from the mother's womb, will separate, what need is there to mention enjoyments and relatives? Therefore, only the excellent Dharma will not perish. So, death is inevitable. As Putowa said, "What will I become next year today?" As it is said, it is impossible to determine when death will come, and the thought that I will not die like this now is always inverted. For one's own essence, it is impossible to determine which will come first, next year today or the next life. Even a month, half a month, ten days, and the next life, it is impossible to determine which will come first. Even if strict protection is taken, there is no guarantee that one will not die from a minor illness. In short, from birth onwards, one is heading towards death. For those who are born, it is inevitable to experience aging, sickness, and death. Even if one prays, "Do not age, do not get sick, do not die," what is the use? Or, Sharawa said to the Khampa merchants, "Just as you merchants stay on the road every day, the cycle of birth and death is also like this." As it is said. After death, this corpse will also, the body will eventually turn to ashes, eventually dry up and rot, eventually become unclean, meaningless, completely destroyed, and rotten. Know that this is the law of separation. As the teacher said in the Letter to a Friend, after cremation, the corpse turns to ashes, or the corpse changes from swelling to dust. Therefore, thinking about impermanence, Sharawa said that in India, he went to the cemetery and saw the bones of others and his own body, when will they become the same? As it is said, the monks went to the cemetery, saw the new and old corpses, and thought that they were also of this nature, etc., and thus realized it. We do not have the opportunity to go to the cemetery, so, recall all the men, women, old and young who have died in our hometown, recite and count, and I also

I contemplate in this way, through such laws and so on. When Geshe Phuchungwa was at Darkar Monastery, even when going to Niwo Rangkar to place butter, he would spread his fingers and count how many kings had died. He would say, "This one also died, that one also died." When returning, even if it rained and he got wet, he wouldn't bother to wipe it off, but would roll up his cushion and lean on it, only making sounds. Also, when Phuchungwa was staying in Wo-bo and Putowa was staying in Nyenpo, Sharawa and the two of them would schedule Dharma practice times on the ridge of Nyenpo Mountain in the mornings and afternoons. Behind the rocks, there were many tsha-tsha houses or stupas, and he would say, "So-and-so who was called this has died, so-and-so who was called this has died," just like Aja Mayo said, "Only after death does one understand," so one should contemplate in this way. Similarly, external impermanence also symbolizes internal impermanence. Therefore, observe the changing colors of the external world's spring, summer, autumn, and winter, or the rising and falling of rivers, or the waxing and waning of the moon. As the song says, "When will the water's edge, the medicinal lands, the places where waves arise and cease, and the abodes of sentient beings all become equal in emptiness?" Like this, I also think that my life is just as impermanent. Thinking in this way from various perspectives, if one truly understands impermanence, others will develop compassion for me, and I will always abide in joy. Therefore, contemplating death is very important. Sharawa said, "Now, all the higher and lower vows have not been settled, how sharp the eyes of this life are, how fast the steps are, doing the small and big things of this life, all this is because of not understanding impermanence. If one understands impermanence, like Putowa not needing anything." Geshe himself said, "My greatest clearing of appearances is meditating on death." Because of clinging to this life, being attached to relatives and friends, and wealth and enjoyment, feeling that appearances are beautiful and samsara is delightful, all these must be cleared away, and one must prepare for future lives, this is the greatest clearing of appearances. If one doesn't take root here, then all the higher Dharmas will become like trying to catch the moon in water, meaningless.
