Attaining Buddhahood is very swift. Because attaining the fruit requires entering the cause, once the thought arises to enter the cause—the practice of the pāramitās (the six perfections)—without any hesitation, entry arises and is undertaken. Therefore, with the great increase of compassion, attaining Buddhahood is very swift. If one wishes to enter the door of secret mantra by quickly understanding the method of secret mantra, one should examine his karmic connections and capacity. If suitable, let him enter; if not suitable, do not let him enter. Therefore, a lama with clairvoyance is needed. Entering secret mantra itself, it seems, also has a strict order that relies on the four classes of tantras. Therefore, it is said that in this Kadampa tradition of Jowo (Atiśa), learning this order of mind training, once one has reached a certain level, one takes the vows, which is a strict order, as said by the great Sharawa. Therefore, the great Geshe Sharawa himself also took ordination at the age of eighteen. After that, he went to Tsang (Ü-Tsang region), thinking that he must study all the Mahāyāna secret mantras, and one summer he went to the place where Putowa was staying in Taklung Tang. After listening to this Dharma teaching, he made up his mind that there was no hope of entering secret mantra in this life. That winter, he listened to a Śikṣāsamuccaya, and he also gave up the idea of becoming the lord of Aku's place—the Sepa. Geshe himself said, "At first, I wanted to go to Tsang to study secret mantra. However, Sharawa spoke once, and I gave up the idea of secret mantra. I was a fool at the time, and my understanding was not good. Now it seems that no matter how much I recite, I will not give up the idea. After that, after listening to the Śikṣāsamuccaya, I gave up the idea of becoming Sepa." 3) Explaining the characteristics of the three types of persons separately Explaining the characteristics of the three types of persons separately is divided into three parts. The characteristics of the lesser person The characteristics of the lesser or lowest person are: As it is said in the scriptures, "Anyone who, by various means, seeks only the happiness of samsara for himself is called a lesser person." That is to say, having been born among humans, having obtained leisure and endowments, therefore having a basis of a person who can be guided in the Dharma, having great faith in the greatness of karma and its results, therefore abandoning evil and entering the path of the ten virtuous actions.

The method of attaining a state [of being] is when some strive only for the happiness of cyclic existence as the fruit to be obtained. And that, when one strives with the thought of wanting to enjoy such happiness oneself, that is to be known as the lowest or least among the three types of persons. That is, the phrase "only for the happiness of cyclic existence" excludes the middling person who strives for good rebirths as a basis for accomplishing liberation from suffering. The phrase "striving for oneself" also excludes the bodhisattva who strives for good rebirths as a basis for benefiting others. Regarding the characteristics of that lowest or least person, the great Sharawa said that the one who is named as the lowest person is the one who has faith in cause and effect. If there is a genuine mind of fear and dread of the suffering of the three lower realms, then one will abandon even the slightest sins and non-virtues for the sake of one's life. And for that, one must first have a genuine recollection of impermanence and death. Because upon dying, one does not cease to exist, but one must be born. As soon as one is born, one is followed only by karma, and therefore one will abandon non-virtue out of fear of the suffering of the three lower realms and so forth. As it was said to an elder of Gongmowa, a qualified lama should teach and guide a suitable disciple gradually, like a good nurse and a kind mother caring for a sick person and a young child, without making excessive demands at the beginning. First, one must impress upon the disciple's mind the recollection of impermanence and death. Regarding this, Geshe himself said: "In general, the end of all that is born is death, the end of all that is assembled is separation, the end of all that is accumulated is exhaustion, and the end of all that prospers is decline; to endure this is the nature of things. In particular, the end of all that is born is death, this is certain. Those who have died without being born are the noble arhats. But there has never been, will never be, and is not now, anyone who has been born without dying. Therefore, for all that is born, death stands before them. Since all appear to be changing, it is not appropriate to grieve." And: "If the Buddhas and their sons, as well as the solitary realizers and the hearers, have abandoned this aggregate, what need is there to mention others?"
