At this time, one's own state is no different from that of livestock. Although one strives in this way, one does not gain even a speck of dust on one's fingernail in this life. One repeatedly contemplates that future lives are boundless. One contemplates where one's mind is placed and whether one possesses the meaning that a human being should have, thinking with ten fingers clasped on one's chest. If one does not yet possess it, it is extremely important to generate the meaning that a human being should have in one's own continuum. The basis for such practice, at this time of generally explaining the nature of the three types of individuals, the venerable master Geshe Tonpa explains in a manner that is like establishing the body of a treatise, as if entering the order of explanation. Furthermore, the venerable master Geshe himself said: These are all the instructions of my guru, so I will not repeat them no matter what I encounter. Now the Dharma is also about to decline, and I, this old man, am also about to die. After saying this, he repeatedly said in the assembly: If one can guide disciples, then a virtuous friend who has the ability to guide disciples should guide them. First, because this is the practice of achieving Buddhahood, one must guide disciples to cultivate extreme fear of the cycle of birth and death. If one does not have this fear, then the previous practice will definitely not be beneficial. It is like building a castle on ice, which looks strong in winter, but will collapse once it melts. Similarly, if one does not have this fear, one will feel that other Dharmas are very good before the conditions have matured. Once the conditions mature slightly, one will give up. Similarly, through practice, one will generate poverty and fear, and a mind that seeks protection. Just as one's own castle is very strong and surrounded by an army, if one does not have fear, one will not generate a mind that seeks protection. Once such a mind arises, one must guide disciples to cultivate the great qualities of the refuge, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. As a refuge, one must abandon all faults and perfect all qualities. This is not something that one does not have in one's own nature. In particular, in the "Praise of the Excellent," it says: I have abandoned other teachers and taken refuge in you. Why is this? Because you have no faults and perfect qualities. As it is said in the sutras, therefore, one must take refuge with faith, abandon all conceptual thoughts such as worldly names and lineages, and generate the thought that I am a child of the Buddha.

Because it is the time when the vow of refuge arises, after taking refuge, one begins to study the precepts, and from then on, one is considered to have entered the Buddhadharma. Jowo Rinpoche (Atisha) did not allow sectarian bias even in jest. Geshe Dromtönpa also said that there should be no sectarian discrimination. Having thus entered the Buddhadharma, the refuge protects, and the Dharma protects, so one begins to practice the Dharma of cause and effect. Having thus gained certainty, in the manner of, "Desire, hatred, fear, and ignorance, by which one does not transgress the Dharma," when none of the four non-virtues arise with the thought of transgressing the Dharma, it is the time when the vow of a layperson arises, so it is bestowed. If, because of desire, one does not transgress the Dharma, even if one abandons a tiny sin, one can obtain a kingdom or half a kingdom, and if one does not abandon it, one cannot obtain it, but one would not kill for this purpose. If one has genuine faith in karma and its results, it will surely be so. If one has not taken vows, even if one kills a tiny animal, one will be reborn in the Reviving Hell of sentient beings. If one has taken vows, even if one commits a tiny misdeed, it is said that one must experience the suffering of that day. It is said that even that one day is nine million human years. Similarly, if one believes this, there is no occasion to be attached to all the pleasures of a kingdom. One has experienced and been deceived by this many times before. Even if one obtains it again, it is still the nature of Dharma to be deceived. Not transgressing the Dharma because of hatred is: "Though I am burned and killed, or my head falls off, in no way shall I bow to the enemy of afflictions." In this way, even if one is disemboweled or has one's throat cut and is killed, one will not give rise to hatred, nor will one allow oneself to commit even a tiny sin. This is human suffering. If one transgresses the Dharma because of this, the hell guards will constantly kill and so on. Not transgressing the Dharma because of fear is: Putowa said: May all sentient beings of Jambudvipa become wheel-turning kings ruling the three continents. In the Sutra of Miraculous Transformations of the Perfectly Peaceful and Fully Ascertained, it says: May all sentient beings, as numerous as the dust particles in all the realms of the world, become wheel-turning kings ruling Jambudvipa. Great Lord
