Gathered all together, they threatened, "If you do not commit this small sin, we will cut five ounces of flesh and pull out your nails every day to kill you." But (you) do not despise this small sin. If you believe in karma, a person's life will be prolonged, and even if they cut flesh and pull out nails, they will not die, and you must experience suffering, but there is not even the preparation for a day of resurrection. If you despise sin out of fear, then sentient beings will be cut by the weapons of hell, and the beating and pounding of the hell guards will not cease. We will not be intimidated by that, and for the sake of the meager benefit of a mere lump of tsampa or a sip of tea, greed will cause us to violate the Dharma and despise all sins, great and small. Just because of the good or bad that the eyes see, or the high or low of words, they say, "You despise me," and then violate the Dharma out of hatred, despise sin, and quarrel endlessly. Just because of the fear that a certain Jowo or a powerful official will be unfavorable to them, they tell many lies and despise sin. Not violating the Dharma out of ignorance, if you believe in karma, you will not only think that non-virtue will bring suffering, but you will understand how many differences of suffering will arise from the differences of non-virtue, so you will not despise small sins. For example, if you hear that "If you go in this direction, you will encounter a bottomless pit of fire," even your eyes will be wide open, determine where it is, and then avoid falling into it. Instead of saying, "I don't know where it is," and then it doesn't matter even if I fall. Similarly, if you believe in karma, you will not despise sin because of ignorance. Even for a small ordinary cliff, you must be careful and stay there. What more needs to be said about the long cliff that will fall into the abyss of thousands of yojanas? Just like this, even if you fell before, it was just an ordinary cliff. If you despise sin, you will fall into the cliff of sentient hell and so on. Most of us violate the Dharma because we do not have time to discern what is reasonable and unreasonable, and we are confused about the definition of good and evil. In this way, because you believe in karma and do not despise sin, even if you attain a good rebirth, its essence is only suffering, and even if there is a little happiness, it is deceptive. If you have not attained liberation, you will still fall into the lower realms.

Due to falling, even if one obtains the position of a god at the peak of existence, it is no different from being in a copper pot in the Avīci hell. Therefore, one should contemplate that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of suffering. Furthermore, one should know that the cause of suffering lies in the two, karma and afflictions, that are present in one's own basis. Therefore, regarding the three realms, one should not have desire even in dreams, or like escaping from the prison of a man-eating demon, or like a garden being burned down, or like a bird when the sea ice melts, one should generate the thought that samsara is not a place to settle. In terms of action, one should strive to exhaust rebirth even more urgently than putting out a fire that suddenly ignites on one's head or clothes. When one reaches this level, it is the time to generate the vows of a novice monk, so one should bestow them. Furthermore, the fear of samsara increases even more. And, knowing that its root cause is only desire, one should generate the thought that all internal and external desires are like a black poisonous snake spreading rapidly, coming into one's lap, and being afraid even of just driving it away. This is the time to generate the vows of a fully ordained monk, so one should bestow them. When such a thought arises, drying up the ocean of samsara is effortless, like water after the dry season, and one's own liberation from suffering is autonomous. Because, at that time, one is completely liberated from suffering, even without attaining Buddhahood, and that also depends on sentient beings. Even if one includes one's own attainment of liberation in consideration, but close ones are drowning in the ocean of samsara, appearing as if falling into an abyss, unrecognizable due to the transmigration of birth and death, abandoning them, if one only attains liberation alone, there is nothing more shameless than that. Like this, one should know that if one abandons close sentient beings and only attains liberation alone, there is nothing more shameless than that. Therefore, one should cultivate loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, and cultivate compassion based on one's own experience. Therefore, compassion is like falling into the mouth of a snake, or like a mother swallowing poison. Without measuring whether one has the ability or whether sentient beings can bear it, but thinking that sentient beings are pitiful, one is able to make the vow to accomplish great Bodhi. When one reaches this level, it is the time to generate the vows of aspiration Bodhicitta, so one should bestow them. Because the wave of compassion increases even more, one becomes a Buddha.
