If one thinks it arises from a cause, then it is established as having a cause. If it arises without a cause, then there would be no difference, and cows and wool, etc., should also have the qualities of a lotus. Crows should also have the qualities of a peacock, but that is not the case. Furthermore, as it says: "Because without a cause, it does not depend on others, it would always exist or never exist." According to this, it should either always exist or never exist, but that is not the case. Because things appear to arise at certain times in certain places, in conventional truth, it is established as depending on causes, so it is not born from no cause. Therefore, the objects of the aggregates, etc., are not born in ultimate truth. In conventional truth, the appearance of the fruit arising from cause and condition is merely relative, like short relative to long, light relative to a flame, or this shore relative to the other shore, so it is merely conventional truth, not substantially established. Because it is not reasonable for self-nature to arise from cause and condition: "If self-nature arises from cause and condition, then self-nature would become something made. How could self-nature be called something made?" Because the scriptures say this, self-nature cannot be changed by cause. Therefore, the aggregates, etc., are empty of self-nature from the very beginning. To this, Sharawa said: "Just as a vajra can destroy all things, this reasoning also destroys the clinging to reality, so it is called vajra. Because it is subtle and difficult to understand, it is called dust." The second reasoning is to analyze both cause and effect with one and many. It also says: "If one examines all phenomena with one or many, because self-nature is not found, therefore all self-natures are non-existent." That is, for all the phenomena of both cause and effect of the aggregates, etc., if one examines and analyzes with one and many other than the above two reasonings, then neither one nor many can be established as the self-nature of reality, so all the phenomena of the aggregates, etc., are definitely without self-nature from the very beginning. To this, Sharawa said: Acharya Chandrakirti said in the Madhyamaka Five Aggregates: The aggregate of formations

In the context of Prajna, first is the selflessness of persons, and then all knowable things are divided into two types: those with form and those without form. It is said that one establishes the lack of inherent existence through the reasoning of one and many. It is said that establishing it in accordance with this is the quintessence of Jowo's (Atiśa's) Madhyamaka. Among these, the selflessness of persons has already been explained above in terms of the five aggregates, eighteen elements, and twelve sources. It has already been shown that a single "self," a permanent "self," and a profound "self" cannot be established. To establish the selflessness of phenomena, Geshe himself said that the latter of the two reasons given, which demonstrates the reasoning of one and many, cannot be established even when examining both cause and effect with the reasoning of one and many. All phenomena are contained within the aggregates, elements, and sources, and there is no phenomenon other than these. If one examines these with the separation of one and many, merely scattering them into the five aggregates does not establish oneness, and if one searches for each of the five individually, it cannot be established as one. Jowo said that it is blissful to meditate on this alone. Moreover, the teacher Lekdenjé also said: "The world arises from conceptualization, conceptualization arises from mind, and mind arises from body; therefore, one should examine the body." First, examine the aggregate of form, and within that, examine the gross form of the cause from the two of cause and effect. Among the four elements of the cause, it is said to first examine the gross earth element. Merely dividing the form of cause and effect does not establish the aggregate of form as one, and the cause is also divided into four elements, so it cannot be established as one. Like earth, one cannot be established independently without being aggregated with the other three. Even in terms of solidity itself, it is an aggregation of many atoms, so it is not one. If one divides the atoms by the distinction of directions, they will become six or ten, so they cannot be established as one. If one divides each of these again by directions, then no self-nature can be established. The remaining three elements are also the same as this, so the form of the cause is established as lacking inherent existence. In this way, because the form of the cause cannot be established, the form of the effect cannot be established either, and the form of the effect itself is also the five senses.
