Having transcended the person, one transcends the external world. Relying on mind-only, one does not conceptualize external objects. Abiding in the correct object of focus, one utterly transcends mind-only. Even having transcended mind-only, one utterly transcends the absence of appearance. The yogi who abides in the absence of appearance sees the Great Vehicle. Entering, spontaneously accomplished and peaceful, purified by pure aspirations. The supreme wisdom of selflessness is not seen in the absence of appearance. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra, first is the absence of a person, then the absence of grasping, then the absence of a grasper, and then even the knowledge of non-duality is not established. It is held that the four stages of yoga are practiced in sequence. Jowo (Atisha) holds to two kinds of selflessness. First, one meditates on the selflessness of the person. The self of the person is not even established as merely a valid conventional truth, yet outsiders grasp at it with great force as self and what belongs to self. With lesser force, they establish it as self. If one examines this, when one is distracted by what is not established, the thought of "I" arises. Therefore, Aben Kungyal said, "This self of the person is something that hides its face," saying that it is a sign of thought. The grasping at self: If there is a self, then one knows there is another. From the division of self and other arise grasping and hatred. From the connection of these two, all faults arise. As it is, it is the root of all faults and suffering, so meditate on its emptiness. Even if one encounters darkness, if one asks who it is, one will answer, "It is I." Therefore, the one who causes one to fall into suffering is only the grasping at self, so it must be abandoned. Regarding this: If there is acceptance of things as real, then unbearable desire and hatred arise. One completely grasps wrong views. From that, disputes arise. That is the cause of all views. Without that, afflictions do not arise. Therefore, if one completely knows that, then views and afflictions are completely liberated. As it is said in the Ornament of the Middle Way, one should meditate on emptiness, which is free from all acceptance of things as real. Furthermore, one should examine and meditate on whatever attachment is gross. First, even meditating on just the aggregates, elements, and sense bases is the instruction, because all confusion about the self of persons and phenomena arises in dependence on the aggregates and so forth. Therefore, the basis of confusion, whether it is object or subject, should be examined and made empty.
