There is no way to avoid. There is no way to avoid the meditation of placing the mind itself. There is no way to avoid the conduct of taking all actions onto the path. There is no way to avoid the instructions for abandoning obstacles, demons, and wrong paths. There is no way to avoid the practice that does not leave the instructions in words. There is no way to avoid having great confidence and peace of mind at the time of separating body and mind. There is no way to avoid the result of the three kayas (sku gsum) being spontaneously accomplished within oneself. These are the twelve dharmas that cannot be avoided. Ten Signs of a Noble Person: The ten signs of a noble person are: small jealousy and arrogance are signs of a noble person. Small desires and contentment with meager possessions are signs of a noble person. Absence of hypocrisy and duplicity is a sign of a noble person. Doing everything after careful consideration, with mindfulness and awareness, is a sign of a noble person. Guarding the law of cause and effect like the pupil of one's eye is a sign of a noble person. Absence of duplicity in vows and commitments is a sign of a noble person. Having no partiality towards close or new acquaintances among sentient beings is a sign of a noble person. Not getting angry when others accumulate negativity and being patient is a sign of a noble person. Giving all victories to others and taking all defeats upon oneself is a sign of a noble person. Disagreeing with other worldly people in thought and action is a sign of a noble person. These are the ten signs of a noble person. The opposite of these are the signs of an evil person. Ten Dharmas Without Benefit: The ten dharmas without benefit are: no matter how much service and respect is given to the illusory body, it is impermanent, so there is no benefit. No matter how much greed and miserliness is accumulated for worldly wealth, one will go naked and empty-handed on the morning of one's death, so there is no benefit. No matter how much effort is spent building castles and mansions, one will go alone on the morning of one's death, and even the corpse will be taken out the door, so there is no benefit. No matter how much wealth and possessions are given out of love for children and grandchildren, they will not be of any help at the time of one's death, not even for a moment, so there is no benefit. No matter how much affection and consideration is given to relatives and friends, one will have to go alone and without companions on the morning of one's death, so there is no benefit. Even if there are many children and grandchildren, they are impermanent, and the possessions given by oneself are certain to be abandoned, so there is no benefit. No matter how much effort is put into land, territories, and careers for the sake of this life --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if one does a little good deed, it is of no benefit because the connection with the next life is completely severed on the morning of one's death. Even if one enters the Dharma gate with faith, if one does not practice according to the Dharma, the Dharma will instead become a cause for falling into the lower realms, so it is of no benefit. Even if one studies the Dharma through hearing, thinking, and meditating, and knows a lot of Dharma, if one does not put it into practice, one will not be able to take it with one at the time of death, so it is of no benefit. Even if one stays with a holy and virtuous spiritual friend for a long time, if one does not have faith and respect, one will not receive the qualities and blessings of the superior, so it is of no benefit. These are the ten Dharmas that are of no benefit. The ten Dharmas of bringing suffering upon oneself: The ten Dharmas of bringing suffering upon oneself are: managing a household without the means, which is like a fool swallowing poison, buying suffering for oneself. Committing sins without Dharma is like a madman jumping off a cliff, creating suffering for oneself. Being hypocritical to others is like a poisonous person serving food, bringing suffering upon oneself. Being a leader without wisdom is like an old woman herding livestock, bringing suffering upon oneself. Not striving to benefit others with altruism, but striving for one's own benefit with the eight worldly concerns, is like a blind person wandering in a wilderness, bringing suffering upon oneself. Engaging in a great task that cannot be accomplished is like a weak person carrying a heavy burden, bringing suffering upon oneself. Disparaging the guru and the Buddha's teachings with arrogance is like a great person's wishes going astray, bringing suffering upon oneself. Abandoning practice and frequenting villages is like a wild animal descending into the plains, bringing suffering upon oneself. Not cultivating innate wisdom, but being distracted by worldly affairs, is like a garuda breaking its wings, bringing suffering upon oneself. Using the guru's and the Three Jewels' property recklessly is like a child swallowing hot coals, bringing suffering upon oneself. These are the ten Dharmas of bringing suffering upon oneself. The ten Dharmas of great kindness to oneself: The ten Dharmas of great kindness to oneself are: abandoning worldly attachment and aversion, and practicing the holy Dharma, is of great kindness to oneself. Abandoning family and friends, and relying on a holy person, is of great kindness to oneself. Putting aside worldly affairs, and engaging in hearing, thinking, and meditating, is of great kindness to oneself. Abandoning villagers and friends, and staying alone in a secluded place, is of great kindness to oneself. Cutting off the attachment to desirable objects, and guarding the vows of non-attachment, is of great kindness to oneself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
