The Collection of Teachings by Master Gampopa GM37, entitled 'The Precious Garland of Supreme Path' First: Ten Things to Remember to Abandon The Collection of Teachings by Master Gampopa, entitled 'The Precious Garland of Supreme Path' Namo Ratna Guru! To those Kagyu (藏文:བཀའ་བརྒྱུད,梵文天城体:Kāṃgyü,梵文罗马拟音:Kagyu,汉语字面意思:Oral Transmission) lineage masters who liberate beings from the terrifying and difficult-to-cross ocean of samsara, adorned with pure conduct, whose blessings flow like a vast ocean, whose extensive and long-lasting prayers are naturally fulfilled, I prostrate and take refuge! Please grant your blessings! Having kept the stream of teachings from these Kagyu lineages in mind for a long time, I will write down this extremely precious essence of the supreme path, called 'The Precious Garland,' for those fortunate ones who are connected to me directly or indirectly and desire guidance. Those who wish to attain liberation and the enlightened state of Buddhahood should first remember these ten things to abandon: This rare and pure human body, is wasted on evil and sinful deeds; This rare opportunity of leisure and endowment, is wasted dying as an ordinary, non-spiritual being; This short life in the degenerate age, is wasted on meaningless activities; One's own mind, the unelaborated nature of the Dharmakaya, is wasted by sinking into the swamp of delusion and samsara; The precious guru who leads the way, is wasted by being separated from until enlightenment is attained; The boat of liberation, the vows of discipline, is wasted by being destroyed by the power of afflictions and carelessness; The realization gained through the kindness of the guru, is wasted by being lost in the thicket of conceptual constructs; The profound instructions of the accomplished ones, are wasted by being sold to unworthy individuals; Kind parents, sentient beings, are wasted by being abandoned with hatred; Youthful vigor, the three doors of body, speech, and mind, are wasted by being left in ordinary indifference. These are the ten things to abandon. Second: Ten Things Needed Ten things needed: One needs mature judgment to lay a correct foundation; --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One needs to be someone who can practice diligently and continuously. One needs to be someone who understands the strengths and weaknesses of others, so as not to misunderstand the guru's instructions. One needs to be someone who, with wisdom and firm faith, comprehends the guru's intentions. One needs to be someone who, with mindfulness, awareness, and caution, is not tainted by the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. One needs to be someone who, with armor-like diligence and courage, steadfastly keeps their vows. One needs to be someone who, with unattached and unselfish conduct, is not bound by worldly affairs. One needs to be someone who is proficient in the three aspects of preliminary, main practice, and subsequent activities, and diligently accumulates merit and wisdom. One needs to be someone who, through love and compassion, directly or indirectly strives to benefit sentient beings. One needs to be someone who, with wisdom and understanding, does not cling to all phenomena as real or as mere labels. These are the ten qualities needed. Ten Dharmas to be Relied Upon: Rely on a holy guru who possesses realization and compassion. Rely on a secluded, delightful, and blessed monastery. Rely on friends who share the same view and conduct, and who are trustworthy. Rely on a way of life that remembers the faults of necessities and is content. Rely on the unobstructed instructions passed down from the lineage of accomplished masters. Rely on medicines, mantras, and auspicious connections that benefit oneself and others. Rely on food and methods that are suitable for one's constitution. Rely on Dharma and conduct that benefit one's practice. Rely on disciples who possess faith, respect, and good fortune. Rely on mindfulness and awareness in the four modes of conduct. These are the ten Dharmas to be relied upon. Ten Dharmas to be Abandoned: Abandon a teacher whose actions are mixed with the eight worldly concerns. Abandon companions and bad friends who harm the mind and practice. Abandon places and monasteries that are distracting and full of harm. Abandon a livelihood obtained through theft, deception, and fraud. Abandon activities and actions that harm the mind and practice. Abandon food and conduct that harm the constitution. Abandon attachment bound by desire and miserliness. Abandon reckless behavior that causes others to distrust. Abandon meaningless wandering and activities. Abandon concealing one's own faults and proclaiming the faults of others. These are the ten Dharmas to be abandoned. Ten Dharmas Not to be Abandoned: Do not abandon appearances, as they are the self-luminous light of the mind. Do not abandon discursive thoughts, as they are the play of Dharmata (the nature of reality). Do not abandon afflictions, as they are the manifestation of wisdom. Do not abandon desirable objects, as they are the fertilizer for increasing experience and realization. Do not abandon sickness and suffering, as they are spiritual friends. Do not abandon enemies and obstacles, as they are the prodding of Dharmata. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
