Therefore, do not abandon. If it arises naturally, because it is an accomplishment, do not abandon it. Any method, because it is the ladder of wisdom, do not abandon it. Do not abandon the bodily conduct that can accomplish and be competent. Even if the ability is small, do not abandon the thought of benefiting others. These are the ten dharmas that should not be abandoned. Ten Dharmas to be Known: The ten dharmas to be known are: Outward appearances seem real, know them to be unreal. The nature of the inner mind seems to be without self, know it to be emptiness. Intermediate thoughts seem to arise from conditions, know them to be sudden. The body composed of the four elements seems to be assembled, know it to be impermanent. All beings' suffering and happiness arise from karma, know that karmic results are infallible. Suffering seems to be the cause of inevitable arising, know the virtuous friend to be the guide. Happiness seems to be the root of samsara, know attachment to be a demon. Distractions seem to be obstacles to Dharma practice, know them to be obstacles to accumulating merit. Obstacles seem to be the spur to diligent practice, know enemies to be gurus. Ultimately, all dharmas seem to be without inherent existence, know to treat everything with equanimity. These are the ten dharmas to be known. Ten Dharmas to be Practiced: The ten dharmas to be practiced are: Having entered the door of Dharma, do not mix with worldly crowds, practice according to the Dharma. Having left one's homeland, do not settle down in a foreign land, practice non-attachment. Having relied on a holy guru, abandon arrogance and act according to his instructions. Having trained the mind in listening and contemplating, do not just talk, put what you have learned into practice. Having realization arise in your mind, do not let it go, practice diligently. Having experience arise in your mind, do not mix with crowds, practice in solitude. Having made promises and vows, do not let the three doors of body, speech, and mind be unrestrained, practice the three trainings. Having generated the supreme Bodhicitta, do not only think of yourself, do everything for the benefit of others. Having entered the door of mantra, do not let the three doors of body, speech, and mind be ordinary, practice the three mandalas. In youth, do not wander aimlessly, practice asceticism at the feet of a holy guru. These are the ten dharmas to be practiced. Ten Dharmas to be Diligent In: The ten dharmas to be diligent in are: Beginners should be diligent in listening and contemplating. Having generated experience, be diligent in meditation. Until stability is attained, be diligent in seclusion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If lethargy is dominant, diligently restrain the mind. If agitation is dominant, diligently cultivate awareness. Until the mind is stable, diligently practice shamatha (calm abiding). Relying on shamatha, diligently practice post-meditation. If adverse conditions are numerous, diligently practice the three kinds of patience. If desire and attachment are strong, diligently force yourself to reverse attachment. If love and compassion are weak, diligently cultivate bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment). These are the ten practices to be diligent in. The following are the ten dharmas for urging oneself on: The ten dharmas for urging oneself on are: contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, thereby urging oneself to practice the sacred Dharma. Contemplating death and impermanence, thereby urging oneself to engage in virtuous deeds. Contemplating the infallibility of karma and its results, thereby urging oneself to abandon sinful and unwholesome actions. Contemplating the faults of samsara (cyclic existence), thereby urging oneself to strive for liberation. Contemplating the suffering of sentient beings in samsara, thereby urging oneself to cultivate bodhicitta. Contemplating the distorted perceptions of sentient beings, thereby urging oneself to study and contemplate. The following are the ten ways to go astray: The ten ways to go astray are: if faith is small but wisdom is great, one will go astray into being a mere talker. If faith is great but wisdom is small, one will go astray into being a stubborn fanatic. If diligence is great but there are no instructions, one will go astray into faults and errors. If one has not cut through conceptual elaborations of study and contemplation beforehand, one will go astray into the birthplace of the darkness of meditation. If one has a superficial understanding but does not practice, one will go astray into being a glib Dharma storyteller. If one has not trained the mind in vast skillful means and great compassion, one will go astray into the lesser vehicle of the path. If one has not trained the mind in the wisdom of emptiness, whatever one does will go astray into the path of samsara. If one does not subdue the eight worldly concerns, whatever one does will go astray into worldly adornments. If one has much devotion from villagers and common people, one will go astray into pleasing the faces of evil people. If one has great qualities and abilities but the mind is unstable, one will go astray into being a sorcerer for evil people. These are the ten ways to go astray.
