It is easy to mistake emptiness for fabricated emptiness. It is easy to mistake the Dharmadhatu (ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབྱིངས་, *chos kyi dbyings*, realm of phenomena) for nihilistic views. It is easy to mistake experience for realization. It is easy to mistake a monk for a pretender. It is easy to mistake liberation for being possessed by demons. It is easy to mistake an accomplished one for a fraud. It is easy to mistake altruism for selfishness. It is easy to mistake skillful means for deceit. These are the ten places where mistakes are easily made. Ten Unmistaken Dharmas: To renounce the world and go forth from home to homelessness without attachment to anything is unmistaken. To cherish the holy lama, the virtuous spiritual friend, like a crown on one's head is unmistaken. To make the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating on the Dharma, one's primary practice is unmistaken. To have a high view and low conduct is unmistaken. To have a broad mind and narrow vows is unmistaken. To have great wisdom and little pride is unmistaken. To be rich in instructions and diligent in practice is unmistaken. To have good experiences and realizations and no arrogance is unmistaken. To be able to stay alone and also join gatherings is unmistaken. To have no ties of self-interest and be skilled in methods for the benefit of others is unmistaken. These are the ten unmistaken dharmas. Fourteen Meaningless Dharmas: Having obtained a human body and not remembering the holy Dharma is like going to a treasure island and returning empty-handed, it is meaningless. Entering the Dharma gate and still engaging in household affairs is like a moth jumping into a flame, it is meaningless. Staying with a Dharma teacher who has no faith is like dying of thirst at the edge of the ocean, it is meaningless. Dharma that does not become an antidote to the four roots and clinging to self is like placing an axe and a tree trunk together, it is meaningless. Instructions that do not become an antidote to afflictions are like a sick person carrying a medicine bag, it is meaningless. Verbal learning that does not penetrate one's being is like a parrot reciting, it is meaningless. Giving alms with things taken without permission through theft, robbery, or deceit is like putting dirty clothes in water, it is meaningless. Making offerings to the Three Jewels after harming sentient beings is like cutting off one's son's flesh to give to one's mother, it is meaningless. Taking on pretense and tolerance for the sake of one's own desires in this life is like a cat stalking a mouse, it is meaningless. Doing great virtuous deeds desiring fame and honor in this life is like exchanging a wish-fulfilling jewel for a single wood apple, a single blade of grass, or a single lump of tsampa. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is meaningless, like exchanging one pebble for another. No matter how much one hears, if one's own mindstream remains like a mute, it is meaningless, like a doctor afflicted with a chronic disease. A master of instructions without experience is meaningless, like a rich man's treasury without a key. Explaining the Dharma to others without understanding its meaning oneself is meaningless, like a blind person leading another blind person. Holding the experience arising from skillful means as supreme and not seeking the meaning of the true nature is meaningless, like mistaking orpiment for gold. These are the fourteen meaningless Dharmas. The eighteen flaws of practitioners are: Dwelling in solitude but striving for worldly gain is a flaw of practitioners. Gathering assemblies but fulfilling one's own desires is a flaw of practitioners. Being learned in the Dharma but not fearing sin is a flaw of practitioners. Having great instructions but one's own mindstream remaining ordinary is a flaw of practitioners. Maintaining strict discipline but having great desires is a flaw of practitioners. Having good realization but not taming one's own mind is a flaw of practitioners. Entering the Dharma gate but not abandoning attachment and aversion to worldly affairs is a flaw of practitioners. Abandoning worldly affairs, Practicing the Dharma but not giving up farming is a flaw of practitioners. Understanding the meaning but not putting it into practice is a flaw of practitioners. Making vows of practice but not being able to persevere is a flaw of practitioners. Having nothing to do but the Dharma, yet one's conduct cannot be restrained is a flaw of practitioners. Living off the support of others, yet one's mind is engaged in seeking pleasure is a flaw of practitioners. Using the power of virtuous deeds to exorcise diseases and spirits is a flaw of practitioners. Revealing profound instructions for the sake of food and wealth is a flaw of practitioners. Praising oneself through skillful means and disparaging others through skillful means is a flaw of practitioners. Explaining instructions to others, yet one's own mindstream is not in accordance with the Dharma is a flaw of practitioners. Being unable to stay alone and not knowing how to associate with others is a flaw of practitioners. Being unable to enjoy happiness and unable to endure suffering is a flaw of practitioners. These are the eighteen flaws of practitioners. The twelve indispensable Dharmas are: First, one must have unwavering faith that deeply fears saṃsāra (轮回). One must have a qualified guru who can guide one to the path of liberation. One must have the wisdom to understand the meaning of the Dharma. One must have diligence filled with armor-like courage and strength. One must have the accumulation of merit through the three trainings (discipline, concentration, and wisdom) and the two accumulations (accumulation of merit and accumulation of wisdom) without being satisfied. One must have the view that realizes the true nature of phenomena. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
