Recognizing one's own kindness is the greatest respect for oneself. Being content with adversity and not craving good things is the greatest kindness to oneself. Not entrusting autonomy to others and steadfastly upholding one's vows is the greatest kindness to oneself. Disregarding immediate comfort and striving for ultimate Bodhi is the greatest kindness to oneself. Abandoning attachment to material things and practicing emptiness is the greatest kindness to oneself. Not letting body, speech, and mind fall into ordinariness, but striving for the union of the two accumulations (of merit and wisdom) is the greatest kindness to oneself. These are the ten dharmas of the greatest kindness to oneself. Ten Correct Dharmas: Believing in the law of cause and effect is the correct view of a person of lower faculties. Realizing that all phenomena, internal and external, are appearance and emptiness, awareness and emptiness in union, is the correct view of a person of intermediate faculties. Realizing that the object of observation, the observer, and realization are inseparable is the correct view of a person of superior faculties. Abiding in single-pointed concentration is the correct meditation of a person of lower faculties. Abiding in the concentration of the four unions is the correct meditation of a person of intermediate faculties. The meditator, the object of meditation, and the experience are inseparable, and abiding in a state of non-objectification is the correct meditation of a person of superior faculties. Guarding the law of cause and effect like the apple of one's eye is the correct conduct of a person of lower faculties. Practicing all dharmas as if they were dreams and illusions is the correct conduct of a person of intermediate faculties. Not engaging with anything is the correct conduct of a person of superior faculties. Self-grasping and all afflictions gradually diminishing and pacifying is the correct sign of warmth for people of superior, intermediate, and lower faculties. These are the ten correct dharmas. Ten Mistakes of Practitioners: Not relying on a lama who practices the Dharma correctly, but following a deceitful, empty talker is extremely wrong. Not seeking the whispered instructions of accomplished masters, but insisting on meaningless intellectual Dharma is extremely wrong. Not using fleeting appearances to practice diligently, but planning to stay permanently and building grandly is extremely wrong. Not contemplating the meaning of the Dharma alone, but talking about Dharma in a large gathering is extremely wrong. Not using surplus wealth for offerings and generosity, but accumulating wealth with greed and deceit is extremely wrong. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mistakes: It is very wrong to not protect vows and commitments, and to let the three doors of body, speech, and mind be unrestrained. It is very wrong to not familiarize oneself with the meaning of realizing the nature of reality, but to spend one's life on trivial activities. It is very wrong to not be able to tame one's own wild nature, but to try to tame the wild nature of others. It is very wrong to not cultivate the experiential understanding that arises within, but to pursue the gains of this life. It is very wrong to not exert effort now that one has gathered the perfect conditions, but to enjoy laziness and complacency. These are the ten mistakes of a practitioner. Ten Necessary Dharmas: The ten necessary dharmas are: First, one needs a faith that fears samsara like a prisoner escaping from a dungeon. In the middle, one needs a diligence that does not regret even dying, like a farmer plowing the fields. Finally, one needs a peace of mind like a great person who has accomplished a great task. First, one needs to know without doubt, like an arrow hitting the bullseye. In the middle, one needs to meditate without distraction, like a mother who has lost her only child. Finally, one needs to know without doing, like a shepherd being chased by enemies. First, one needs to have certainty in the Dharma, like a hungry person encountering good food. In the middle, one needs to have certainty in one's own mind, like a poor person finding a wish-fulfilling jewel. Finally, one needs to have certainty in non-duality, like a false pretense collapsing. One needs to be certain of that very nature, like a crow flying from a ship. These are the ten necessary dharmas. Ten Unnecessary Dharmas: The ten unnecessary dharmas are: If one has realized the emptiness of mind, then one does not need to study and contemplate. If one knows that awareness is stainless, then one does not need to purify sins. If one abides on the true path, then one does not need to accumulate merit. If one cultivates the natural state, then one does not need to meditate on skillful means. If one knows that thoughts are the nature of reality, then one does not need to meditate on non-thought. If one knows the root of afflictions, then one does not need to rely on antidotes. If one knows that appearances and sounds are illusory, then one does not need to accept or reject. If one knows that suffering is accomplishment, then one does not need to seek happiness. If one realizes that one's own mind is unborn, then one does not need to practice transference of consciousness. If one does anything for the benefit of others, then one does not need to accomplish one's own benefit. These are the ten unnecessary dharmas. Ten Superior Dharmas: The ten superior dharmas are: Among the countless sentient beings in the six realms, a human body endowed with leisure and opportunity is particularly superior. Among the faithless barbarians, faith in the Dharma is particularly superior. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
