First, impermanence is needed; without it, one falls into the path of the Shravakas (Listeners) and others. Impermanence is also needed in the end; without it, the two bodies (Rupa-kaya and Dharma-kaya) will not arise. Similarly, impermanence is needed at the beginning; without it, one will not turn away from this life. It is also needed in the middle; without it, one will cling to permanence and stray into the path of the Shravakas and others. It is also needed in the end because impermanence and emptiness are of the same meaning. Karma and its result are also needed at the beginning; if the discipline is pure, the door to the evil destinies will be closed. It is also needed in the middle; one perfects the two accumulations (accumulation of merit and accumulation of wisdom) as if in a dream or illusion. It is also needed in the end; the ultimate conventional truth is the two Rupa-kayas. Therefore, the stages of the path are very important. If these are not present, even if a glimpse of innate awareness arises, if one clings to the world and relatives, that innate awareness will not help. One will only sink downwards and not rise upwards. Do not cling to this life; be certain that all phenomena of appearance and sound are like dreams and illusions. Cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of Bodhicitta. If one is certain in this way, even without innate awareness, he will rise upwards and not sink downwards. Then, if a genuine innate awareness arises in the continuum, what are the nature of innate awareness, the result of innate awareness, and the cause of innate awareness? The nature is: it is not a non-existent meaning, it is free from all arising and ceasing. The result is: that which is without arising and ceasing is the Dharma-kaya, from which the two Rupa-kayas arise. The Rupa-kayas also arise from the bliss-clarity-non-conceptuality of innate awareness; therefore, the three kayas are the result of innate awareness. Bliss-clarity arises from Tummo (inner heat); therefore, Tummo is the cause of innate awareness. Even if innate awareness arises, if there is no Tummo, it is only mere wisdom. If there is Tummo, it is the union of skillful means and wisdom. Lama Milarepa said: 'It is more difficult to have a view that does not arise from meditation, so it is very important to strive in Tummo.' What kind of Dharma is needed for individuals of superior, middling, and inferior faculties? The view of the Paramitas is: among the three types of individuals, the superior individual cultivates loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of Bodhicitta, and realizes the ultimate Madhyamaka (Middle Way) view. The middling individual, based on the Dharma of the middling individual, understands that all practices are impermanent. The inferior individual, based on the Dharma of the inferior individual, what should he actually do? Because he fears the suffering of the three evil destinies, he has faith in karma and its results and practices them accordingly. Even though he is called an inferior individual, he has the correct view of worldly people. Whoever has this view will not fall into the evil destinies even for thousands of lifetimes.' So, how should these three types of individuals be guided?

Furthermore, having transcended the suffering of the three lower realms, reaching the level of gods and humans in the higher realms. When looking upwards, there is no happiness in any part of samsara (cyclic existence). The nature of samsara is like being in the middle of a burning mountain, or a ship capsizing in the middle of the ocean, or a boat capsizing in the middle of a river. In short, one must strive to attain nirvana (liberation from suffering). The intermediate person follows the path of the Shravakas (listeners), attaining the fruit of Arhatship (one who has destroyed the enemies of afflictions). Since this is not sufficient, one must strive to attain unsurpassed Bodhi (enlightenment). This is not the path of the Paramitas (perfections), but rather both the generation stage and the completion stage. Through the generation stage, one accomplishes the realization of union. Through the intermediate and lower generation stages, one reverses ordinary clinging. The highest sees oneself as the deity. How does one visualize? One visualizes as the five Buddha families, visualizes as the five goddesses, visualizes as the sixteen Bodhisattvas, and so on. Whether external or internal, one visualizes as the deity. The intermediate one ascertains it as illusion, the lower one generates faith. In terms of the completion stage, the highest sees oneself as a Buddha, the intermediate one realizes the essence as unborn, the lower one relies on what is with characteristics and practices with one-pointedness. So, what is the difference between the Paramitas and the Secret Mantra? The Paramitas take the general appearance as the object, examining the external object of grasping through one and many, making it emptiness. If there is no object of grasping, there is no grasper. If the object of grasping is completely eradicated, then the grasper will collapse on its own. Therefore, one does not speculate on the internal mind of grasping. The Mantrika (practitioner of mantra) does not speculate on the external object of grasping, but expands it. When looking at where the initial mind arises from, it does not arise from anywhere. When looking at where the initial mind arises from, it does not arise from anywhere. When looking at where it abides in the middle, it does not abide anywhere. When looking at where it ultimately ceases, it does not cease anywhere. When looking at what its nature is like, it is not established as the essence of anything. Like that, there is nothing, this is called awareness, it is the domain of wisdom, not the domain of the mind of conceptual thought. (Sanskrit Devanagari: , Sanskrit Romanization: , Chinese literal meaning: the domain of self-aware wisdom of each individual). Abiding in such meaning, one will ultimately not cling. The difference between the Paramitas and the Secret Mantra is that the Paramitas take the general appearance as the object. The general appearance is, examining the nature of all phenomena through one and many, based on non-establishment, making all phenomena non-established, like the sky being completely pure, this is taking the general appearance as the object. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
