Collected Teachings of Gampopa GM29: A Summary of the Essential Points of Sutra and Tantra Practice 2-3-1a (Sa). The words of Dharma Lord Dagpo Lhaje. A Summary of the Essential Points of Sutra and Tantra Practice. This is a compilation of the essential points of practice of Dharma Lord Dagpo Lhaje. A Summary of the Essential Points of Sutra and Tantra Practice. 2-3-1b Namo Guru. (藏文:ན་མོ་གུ་རུ།) Fearing the suffering of the three lower realms, knowing that the only refuge is the Buddha, and not abandoning taking refuge even for the sake of one's life, this is the Dharma of a person of small capacity. Therefore, always contemplate the suffering of the three lower realms and take refuge. Completely turning away from all of samsara, desiring to attain liberation and nirvana, therefore abandoning the ten non-virtues and practicing the ten virtues, this is the Dharma of a person of medium capacity. Therefore, always contemplate the suffering of samsara, 2-3-2a abandoning even the slightest non-virtue, and embracing all virtues. Unable to bear the suffering of all mother sentient beings in samsara, desiring to attain unsurpassed enlightenment for their sake, this is the Dharma of a person of great capacity. Therefore, always strive to cultivate loving-kindness and compassion towards sentient beings. By contemplating the suffering of the lower realms, turning away from the lower realms and desiring to attain the happiness of gods and humans in the higher realms, therefore taking refuge in the Three Jewels, abandoning the ten non-virtues and practicing the ten virtues. Then, contemplating the suffering of all of samsara, turning away from all of samsara and desiring to attain liberation and nirvana, therefore taking the vows of a fully ordained bhikshu, making discipline the means of practice, thereby becoming disillusioned with this life. Then, cultivating relative bodhicitta, thereby turning away from the Hinayana. 2-3-2b Then, cultivating the two types of selflessness, this is the fundamental teaching of the Kadampa school. Even if it is a tantric empowerment, according to the Kadampa tradition, the completion stage is not shown from the beginning. At first, only the accumulation of merit is shown, then a little of the generation stage is shown, then the invocation of the wisdom being is shown, then the empowerment, offerings, and praises, and then the completion stage is shown, but not the completion stage from the beginning. Geshe Chakriwa said: 'The view is the relative truth, the Madhyamaka that is free from the two extremes is the view of the Paramitas, there is nothing to be observed in the ultimate truth.' He said that the tantric view is the mind. Naropa's view is: 'Making the immature mature is the path of empowerment, making the mature liberated is the two stages of generation and completion, on a single seat.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One should practice both sudden and gradual approaches. The sudden approach is to meditate all at once on a single seat. The gradual approach is to gain stability on the lower levels before practicing the higher levels. For example, after gaining stability in the generation stage, one meditates on the completion stage. Among these, what arises from within is the true completion stage. If it does not arise from within, even if it is called profound completion stage, it is actually artificial. Generally speaking, although this is the case, to be liberated from all samsara, one must have ultimate bodhicitta. Regarding this, Jowo Je's (Tibetan: ཇོ་བོ་རྗེ) view is to practice from the outside, Milarepa's (Tibetan: མི་ལ་རས་པ) view is to practice from the inside, and the Lama practices in between. The nature of mind is inherently the Dharmakaya. The Lama's view is that awareness and emptiness arise simultaneously. This can be known from the stories of those who have attained accomplishment, and it is also recorded in the tantras of Vajradhara. For yogis, what arises from within is consistent. The Lama said that if it is different from what arises from within, it is either one's own mistake or someone else's mistake. Some emphasize method, and some emphasize wisdom. For those with low intelligence, method is an important key instruction. When intelligence increases, wisdom naturally arises. If one thinks that method is not needed, that is an attachment that needs to be overcome. Natural arising needs an obstruction. Natural arising means without artificiality. For meditators, the state of non-conceptuality during abiding is continuous. If one continuously maintains non-conceptuality in the essence, then one has not understood the key point of the Dharma, and has not truly understood the Dharma. The key point is that it has never been interrupted since the beginning. Furthermore, Rinpoche (Tibetan: རིན་པོ་ཆེ) said that to say what ultimate truth is like, even the Buddha cannot fully explain it. The state of being uninterrupted cannot be stopped even if the Buddha wants to stop it, and the Buddha cannot fully see it. Geshe (Tibetan: དགེ་བཤེས) and patrons said that relying on sectarian views and analyzing with reason, like a fox entering a thorny thicket, they think that this is the only way to go. If you entrust all your conceptual thoughts and ideas to this, then that is your own action, and it will not become your essence, just like heretical teachers who are unaware of the truth. Geshe Chakriwa (Tibetan: དགེ་བཤེས་ལྕགས་རི་བ) said that Nagarjuna's (Sanskrit: Nāgārjuna) Madhyamaka has two kinds of obscurations that prevent understanding, namely the obscuration of ignorance and the obscuration of views. The obscuration of ignorance is easy to understand, while the obscuration of views refers to being misled by various sectarian conceptualizations. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
