I try my best to hold my breath. If, after practicing for fifteen to twenty days, I feel that I can hold my breath for a long time, then I hold my breath myself and have a friend count with a mala (rosary) next to me. When I can't hold my breath and release it, the friend also stops counting. If the mala counts to thirty-six beads, that's enough; it doesn't matter if it's more. If it's less than thirty-six, then practice for another day. Practice breathing like this until you can steadily hold thirty-six breaths. This is the complete oral instruction for practicing breathing. Then, when breathing becomes proficient, visualize the body as the deity again, visualizing (Tibetan: ཀྵྻུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: क्ष्युं, Sanskrit Romanization: kṣyuṃ, Seed Syllable) at the crown of the head, (Tibetan: ཧཱུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Seed Syllable) in both eyes, (Tibetan: ཧཱུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Seed Syllable) between the eyebrows, (Tibetan: ཡྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: यं, Sanskrit Romanization: yaṃ, Seed Syllable) one in each ear and nostril, (Tibetan: སུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: सुं, Sanskrit Romanization: suṃ, Seed Syllable) in the mouth, (Tibetan: ཧཱུཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Seed Syllable) in the navel, and (Tibetan: ཀྵྻུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: क्ष्युं, Sanskrit Romanization: kṣyuṃ, Seed Syllable) in the anus and urethra. Visualize these letters as white. In this way, seal the nine orifices with nine letters, and then draw the breath into the body, letting the king of mind, A (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: आः, Sanskrit Romanization: āḥ, Light), reside in the navel. Recite 'Hikka' (Tibetan: ཧིཀྐ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हिक्क, Sanskrit Romanization: hikka, Sound) twenty-one times, each time feeling it rise up, reaching the top of the brain, under the skull. Count this twenty-one times with a mala as well, but don't relax at the end. Then draw in the breath again, reciting 'Hikka' (Tibetan: ཧིཀྐ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हिक्क, Sanskrit Romanization: hikka, Sound) twenty-one times with the mala, feeling the A (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: आः, Sanskrit Romanization: āḥ, Light) in the navel sink down. Then release the breath and rest for a moment. Practice guiding it upwards repeatedly like this. When finishing, don't leave it at the crown of the head, but bring it back down to the navel, and then end. Practicing like this for seven days will master Phowa (Tibetan: འཕོ་བ, Transference). The five signs of mastery are: the abdomen enlarges, the forehead feels hot, or hot sweat appears. If a feeling like ants swarming occurs, then it is mastered. The Lama said that this is not necessary; as long as the breath can easily move up and down when drawn in, then it is mastered. After mastering like this, one can stop practicing around the age of twenty, and then perform Phowa (Tibetan: འཕོ་བ, Transference) at the time of death around the age of fifty or sixty. As it says in the 'Four Session Practice': 'First begin by inhaling, completely sealing everything.' Until 'With twenty-one pure breaths, forcefully guide from one place to another. From one joint to another, up to the nine upper joints. Upward and downward reversal, with the seed syllable (Tibetan: ས་བོན, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization:, Literal Meaning:). The letter to be practiced, half and half, reciting with a strong 'I' (Tibetan: ང་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization:, Literal Meaning:) sound, know the meaning that is spoken.' After mastering Phowa (Tibetan: འཕོ་བ, Transference), perform Phowa (Tibetan: འཕོ་བ, Transference) at the time of death later. As it says in the 'Four Session Practice': 'After seeing the signs of death, when the time of death comes, without being afflicted by diseases, etc.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
