Now, to die clearly and without distraction, although there is actually no transference, it is nominally called transference. Regarding transference through the intermediate state body: 1-18-5a When meditating like this, contemplate that your place is on the stone slab of Nandana (a garden in the Trāyastriṃśa heaven) in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three (Trāyastriṃśa, a heaven located on the summit of Mount Meru in Buddhist cosmology). Then meditate. Also, when sleeping, go to the Heaven of the Thirty-Three and generate the desire to meditate there. By doing this, you will dream of meditating in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. This is how to accomplish the transference of manifest joy. So, at the time of death, go to the stone slab of Nandana in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, that stone slab that sinks when pressed and rises when lifted, that was pressed by the feet of the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, a title for the Buddha, meaning 'Blessed One'), that is a blessed place, and there generate the strong desire to meditate on the Mahāmudrā (Mahāmudrā, a advanced meditation method in Buddhism). Thus, consciousness transfers to the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, breath ceases, and the body is left behind. By meditating there, one attains the siddhi (spiritual power or accomplishment) of the Mahāmudrā. Finally, transference through the generation stage (Utpattikrama, a stage in tantric practice where one transforms oneself through visualizing a deity): contemplate yourself as the Iṣṭadevatā (personal chosen deity), contemplate ཨཱཿ (Tibetan, āḥ, Sanskrit Devanagari, ah, Sanskrit Romanization, ah, seed syllable) at the navel, ཧཱུྃ (Tibetan, hūṃ, Sanskrit Devanagari, hum, Sanskrit Romanization, hum, seed syllable) at the heart, and ཀྵྻུྃ་ (Tibetan, kṣyuṃ, Sanskrit Devanagari, kṣyum, Sanskrit Romanization, ksyum, seed syllable) at the Brahmarandhra (aperture at the crown of the head). Then do Kumbhaka (a breath retention technique in yoga), contemplate ཨཱཿ rising up into ཧཱུྃ, ཧཱུྃ rising up, and ཀྵྻུྃ expanding and pushing upwards. Then bring them down again and leave them in their respective places. Practice like this until you are skilled, and when the signs of death appear, at the time of transference, contemplate the Iṣṭadevatā in the space in front of you, ཨཱཿ merging upwards into ཧཱུྃ, contemplate the ཀྵྻུྃ at the crown of the head being clear and bright, and the Brahmarandhra opening completely, say ཨཱཿ with your mouth, making a hiccup sound, contemplate ཧཱུྃ rising upwards effortlessly, and merging into the heart of the Iṣṭadevatā. By doing this repeatedly, you will surely transfer. These are the three transferences: the superior Clear Light (Prabhāsvara, the subtlest level of mind in Buddhism), the intermediate intermediate state body (Antarābhava, the transitional state between death and rebirth), and the inferior generation stage. Now, regarding the method of forceful transference. Place both knees on the ground, 1-18-5b interlock both hands behind the back of the head, lean the waist against a stick, contemplate the heart turning upwards, and loudly say 'Hikkā' (hiccup sound) with your mouth, it is said that you will surely transfer to Sukhavati (the pure land of Amitābha). Or, without falling asleep, contemplate a ཧཱུྃ at the heart, contemplate the Brahmarandhra at the crown of the head as before, then contemplate that ཧཱུྃ shooting out like an arrow, merging into the heart of the Iṣṭadevatā, or contemplate going to Sukhavati, and loudly say 'Hikkā' with your mouth, it is said that you will transfer. That is all (regarding transference methods). Regarding the method of training the winds: sit on a comfortable cushion in the Vajrāsana (a seated posture), straighten the back, tuck in the chin, place the hands in the Samādhāna Mudrā (a hand gesture of meditation) below the navel. First do some exhaling and inhaling, then settle the wind in its place. Then completely inhale the wind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
