If one meditates with vigor, at night, as a sign of mastering dreams, one will have dreams such as jumping into a great river, falling off a cliff, being chased by a dog, light emanating from one's body, and so on. If this happens, and dreams are mastered, do not abandon aspiration, and everything will appear in dreams. This is the mastery of dreams. Then comes the practice of dreams: In dreams, various unpleasant things will appear, such as great rivers and so on. What needs to be done is to cross the river, jump into the fire, walk unhindered through mountains and so on, view all the Buddha-fields, go to the Thirty-Three Realms and meditate there, behold the face of the Protector Maitreya, view the whole of India, trample the sun and moon with one's feet, and do whatever one thinks of in one's mind. If one feels fear and unease when jumping into water and so on, think: 'This is a dream, an illusion, it is not real, whatever I do will be fine.' Do whatever one thinks of in one's mind. Because this is a dream, it is conceptual thought, thinking thus, generate bodhicitta and meditate. Even a person without conceptual thought will generate faith. By practicing dreams in this way, some people attain Buddhahood through dreams, this is a path. This is the instruction on taking dreams as the path. Homage to the Guru and Dakinis! Regarding the three Bardos, there is the Bardo of birth and death: from birth to death; the Bardo of dreams: from dreaming to waking; and the Bardo of existence: from death to rebirth. In the Bardo of birth and death, by familiarizing oneself with the generation and completion stages, one will become stable in the Bardo of dreams. Then there is the Bardo of existence: first, recognizing the Clear Light; second, practicing the illusory body; and third, closing the womb entrance. First, recognizing the Clear Light: Initially, at the time when this body, composed of the four elements, is about to disintegrate, the elements are gradually withdrawn. For someone who is accustomed to the Clear Light, at that time, one should not be distracted from the Clear Light, and one should know that everything is mind. First, the sign of earth dissolving into water is that the body becomes weak; when water dissolves into fire, the mouth and nose become dry; when fire dissolves into wind, the limbs of the body lose warmth from the inside out; when wind dissolves into consciousness, the inner breath ceases. At that moment, appearances arise, and obtaining appearance is the Clear Light. The signs of appearance are: the outer sign is like the rising of the moon, the inner sign is like smoke. Appearance arises... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As an external sign, it is like the rising sun; as an internal sign, it is like a firefly. As a sign of gaining appearance, the external is like darkness enveloping; the internal is like a butter lamp. As a sign of approaching the gaining of appearance, the external is like the dawn breaking; the internal is like the empty, cloudless sky. That is luminosity. Like this, when the two luminosities merge, a person of the highest faculty will attain Buddhahood in one lifetime with one body. As it is said: 'Luminosity is constantly present; the city of Bardo cannot be seen.' The second Bardo is the illusory body, which is divided into two: the pure illusory body and the impure illusory body. From death up to four and a half days, since the initial body has not yet separated, relying on it to meditate on luminosity is the impure illusory body. Both of these illusory bodies should be trained with the wisdom of purifying luminosity and the intention to purify habitual tendencies. At that time, if there is no intention to purify habitual tendencies and one simply abides in the state of luminosity, that is not training. It is said that both of these are difficult within four or seven days. Generally, luminosity should be meditated on in this way for forty-nine days. Every seven days, a conceptual thought arises, so at that time, one should meditate on a strong intention. By doing so, one will attain Buddhahood. The third is preventing entry into the city of the womb: There, when conceptual thoughts arise and one is about to take birth, one takes birth due to attachment and aversion to the parents. Visualize the father as the current Vajra Master, the mother as the consort of the Vajra Master, and oneself as the deity of the Yidam, abiding in the state of luminosity. If that still cannot prevent it, contemplate that everything is like a dream and an illusion, what is there to be attached to? In this way, one will attain Buddhahood in the intermediate state. The Lama said: 'When forty-nine days are prevented, the existence of Samsara is prevented.' If that still cannot prevent it, and one is now about to take a body in any case, then at that time, one will have the freedom in one's mind to choose a body, such as being reborn as a Pandita or a Chakravartin, a body that can benefit sentient beings, and then meditate on the previous luminosity. This refers to the case of attaining Buddhahood through rebirths. Homage to the Lamas! There are three types of transference of consciousness: the highest is transference through luminosity, the intermediate is transference through the illusory body, and the lowest is transference through the generation stage. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
