When devotees gather, the master will teach four methods of digestion: For a yogi, the best method is to have a deep understanding of the view, thereby breaking through the clinging to the reality of appearances and recognizing that appearances have no inherent existence. In this way, they can transcend the discriminating thoughts of good and bad food, and the food will naturally digest. This is the superior method of digestion through realization. The next is to digest through meditation. For example, those who practice Tummo (inner heat yoga) usually need to adjust dullness and agitation. But here, by practicing the channels and energies, one can naturally eliminate external obstacles. The merits gained from practicing the channels and energies are as boundless as the sky. This is the intermediate method for a yogi. Again, it is to digest through the practice of loving-kindness and compassion. Practicing loving-kindness and compassion in both meditative and post-meditative states. Long-term abiding in meditation is like the waxing moon gradually becoming full. When practicing loving-kindness and bodhicitta, when meditation arises, one can slightly realize the nature of mind, thereby reducing the clinging to reality in the post-meditative state. This is the lower-intermediate method for a yogi. The last method is to digest through the yogi's virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind. In the four periods, continuously practice the generation stage and completion stage, or perform prostrations, circumambulations, offerings, and the offering of tormas, as well as recitations. This is the lowest method. The above four methods, namely superior, intermediate (two types), and inferior, can all help digest food. Regarding how to protect the practice site, there are three methods: Long-term retreat is the best method. By practicing retreat and gaining signs, thereby protecting the practice site, this is the intermediate method. Receiving permission and teachings from the lineage master, and strictly observing the precepts, thereby protecting the practice site, this is the lowest method. There are two codes of conduct: The best code of conduct is to abide in the Dharma and strive to benefit sentient beings. The worst code of conduct is to make others have faith in you, and to be peaceful and subdued in behavior. Therefore, these four methods of digesting food and three methods of protecting the practice site are crucial. If these two codes of conduct are lacking, then that is too bad. Therefore, if these are lacking, the venerable one's (Jowo Rinpoche's) food will not be digested, nor can he be included among the practitioners. So, one must possess one of these methods. If one lives in a place where distractions easily arise, or does not protect vows and commitments, that will become a cause for oneself and others to fall into the lower realms. If one does not possess the Dharma oneself, but instead blames others, then these three methods of protecting the practice site are especially important. If these two codes of conduct are lacking, one cannot accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Therefore, one should possess lineage and precepts, and be gentle in body, speech, and mind, thereby benefiting sentient beings. Among these methods, one must at least possess one method of digesting food, one method of protecting the practice site, and these two codes of conduct. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a Dharma practitioner, this is unavoidable. If at that time they gather together, they should benefit sentient beings and practice for the benefit of themselves and others. As the scriptures say, 'Entering the path of accomplishing great benefit for oneself and others, may the auspicious and supreme one also have happiness and well-being today.' Accomplishing the benefit of others is accomplishing one's own great benefit. This is precisely what is meant by the auspicious and supreme one, so one should practice in this way. There is no better Dharma than this. One must rely on a qualified Lama (spiritual teacher). In all situations, if one can hear even a single word of Dharma, one should listen. If one goes to do even a little Dharma, there is no way to avoid experiencing impermanence and death. Once it arrives, this is impermanence. Having been born into this world, there is no one who does not die, so one will certainly die. Whether one dies now or when, it cannot be determined. Because life has no limit, it cannot be determined when one will die. Because the body has no essence, it cannot be determined when one will die. There are many causes of death; this body is nourished by food, but within food there are also causes that lead to death. This body is warmed by clothing, but warmth can also lead to causes of death, and so on. All favorable conditions can turn into causes of death. Other things like sounds and water, etc., there are extremely many causes of death, so it cannot be determined when one will die. So, since it cannot be determined when one will die, is there anything that can help with death? Actually, there is nothing. Even the wealth one has accumulated cannot help. Death cannot be deceived by wealth. Leaving behind wealth, one departs alone. So, even if relatives and friends surround one, they cannot prevent death; instead, they may cause harm. So, can one's own body, which sustains life, prevent death? One's own body and so on, actually cannot prevent anything. Don't be too confident. Having done like this, one will certainly die. It cannot be determined when one will die. It cannot be determined when death will come. Nothing can prevent death. Now, still being lazy and not practicing Dharma, how can there be leisure? One must practice! How can one be leisurely? Don't be complacent; one must think deeply. When practicing, one must cast aside all the affairs of this life. One must rely on a qualified Lama, for without a Lama it is like losing the path to liberation. As the scriptures say, 'Even if one possesses all qualities, without a Lama one cannot reach the end of samsara. One who does not grasp the oars cannot cross to the other shore.' Furthermore, all Buddhas of the past, present, and future rely on Lamas. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
