Collected Teachings of Gampopa GM7: The Garland of Pearls 1-7-1a ༼ཇ༽ Homage to the venerable gurus! The Garland of Pearls 1-7-1b Homage to the venerable gurus! Now, for the sake of all who listen to the Dharma, it is crucial to meditate on impermanence first. Without it, there is a risk that all Dharma practice will become an aid to this life. What is the purpose of meditating on impermanence? The purpose is to turn the mind away from this life. By meditating on impermanence, we understand that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are impermanent. If we therefore do not cling to this life, that is the purpose of meditating on impermanence. If we do not turn our minds away from this life, there is no need to meditate on impermanence. First, meditate on impermanence to turn the mind away from this life, and then meditate on the faults of samsara. By meditating on the faults of samsara, we must turn away from all of samsara, 1-7-2a and generate renunciation. Generate Bodhicitta, first the relative Bodhicitta. To cultivate relative Bodhicitta, first, deeply implant in your heart the thought 'May all sentient beings have happiness and be free from suffering, and may they ultimately attain perfect Buddhahood.' Whatever you do, aim to benefit all sentient beings, without any personal desires. Generate the mind of the Great Vehicle with altruistic intention, this is cultivating relative Bodhicitta. To cultivate ultimate Bodhicitta, rest the mind in the state where all thoughts of grasping, the grasped, self and other, are inherently non-existent. Practice this in all four activities (walking, sitting, standing, and lying down), this is called cultivating ultimate Bodhicitta. By practicing in this way, you will realize ultimate Bodhicitta. The Dharma is nothing more than this. Now, we need to do some thinking. Now, for the sake of all who listen to the Dharma, we need to do some thinking. Think that this life is impermanent, like lightning in the sky, bubbles in water, and dew on grass. You must keep in your heart the thought that 'nothing will ultimately help.' Keep such a thought in your heart and practice it. To attain Buddhahood, you need a complete and unerring path. What is this complete and unerring path? It is the path of accumulation and the path of 1-7-2b preparation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That which possesses the three aspects of preliminary, main practice, and subsequent practice is called complete (practice). Firstly, the preliminary practice is: to generate a mind of wishing all sentient beings to have happiness and be free from suffering, and ultimately attain perfect Buddhahood. The main practice is: to integrate the six pāramitās into the path of practice. Even giving a single morsel of food, the object of giving itself is the pāramitā of generosity. Giving with a peaceful mind is the pāramitā of discipline. Even when facing an unkind beggar, not generating afflictions is the pāramitā of patience. Giving quickly is the pāramitā of diligence. Holding it with the three minds of love, compassion, and bodhicitta, and giving without distraction is the pāramitā of meditation. Considering the beggar, the giver, the object of giving, and the result of giving as dreamlike and illusory is the pāramitā of wisdom. In this way, recognizing that the main practice is the complete possession of the six pāramitās, and practicing them. The subsequent practice is: not clinging to anything, sealing it with the seal of non-objectification, although everything appears as the nature of equality, but not clinging to it as real, but integrating it into the path of practice. Practicing in this way, firstly, holding it with the mind of benefiting sentient beings, this is the mind of the Mahāyāna. Attaining Buddhahood is also through the Mahāyāna, the Hīnayāna can hardly attain Buddhahood, therefore, it is very important to generate even a trace of the Mahāyāna mind. The main practice should not contradict the path of the six pāramitās, and the subsequent practice should be held with the view of non-objectification, so that a realization like the sky arises for everything. Recognizing in this way, one will not leave imprints on the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness). Because one does not accumulate imprints, there is no basis for karma. Without a basis, one will not be bound by good or bad karma. To this extent, one will not take rebirth, and this is called attaining Buddhahood. Understanding in this way is a complete and unerring path of practice. In this present time, if one cannot practice a complete and unerring path, thereby accomplishing all meaning, then one will feel regret at the end of life. Even if only the last breath remains, death cannot be avoided. Therefore, one must strive to practice from now on and gain certainty. There is no other Dharma besides this. If one must listen to a Dharma in any way, then one must practice the two methods of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations. Accumulating merit and purifying obscurations are very important. This life is like lightning in the sky, fleeting, so one must remove meaningless things from the heart and cultivate relative bodhicitta and ultimate bodhicitta. Generating relative bodhicitta is very important. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
