In order to attain a position, I gave alms, observed moral conduct, practiced patience, exerted diligence, meditated in samadhi, and generated wisdom, just like that. Keeping in mind that one must practice the perfection of the six paramitas, and wholeheartedly engaging in Dharma practice, one should understand the two truths, the ultimate truth and the conventional truth. In the conventional truth, there are karma and the results of karma, as well as all the afflictive dharmas such as birth, aging, sickness, and death. From the paramitas, it is said that there is pure nirvana, as well as the qualities of the body and wisdom. Therefore, in the conventional truth, as long as there are thoughts arising from the differentiation of self and others, good and evil are real. So, one must be very careful about good and evil actions. If one accumulates good karma now, it will ripen into the happiness of good results in the future; if one commits evil deeds now, it will ripen into the suffering of bad destinies in the future. Without a cause, there will be no result, and one cannot attain Buddhahood with wrong or inferior causes. In the paramitas, the Sutra of the Total Collection of Qualities says: 'Until the roots of virtue are not perfected, one will not attain the supreme emptiness.' Therefore, if one does not rely on the ten virtuous actions, the ten practices, or the six paramitas, one will not attain Buddhahood, and there is a great danger of the view going astray and wisdom remaining in an ordinary state. All listeners, as long as there is a clinging to the reality of self, the six realms of beings are also real. When one no longer clings to the self as real, the six realms of beings will also be liberated in their own places. Until one's own clinging to reality is not liberated in its own place, the conventional truth is real. During that time, there are causes of karma and results of karma, so it is very important to believe in karma and its results. When the conventional truth is liberated in its own place and one abandons self-grasping, then in the ultimate truth, there are no results of karma. What is the ultimate truth? It is realization. It is separated from the discriminations of desire, the arrogance of pride, and the terminology of words. When all the discriminations of self and others are purified in their own place, and there is no appearance of self and others, then one realizes the ultimate truth. There, there are no karma and results of karma. Once one realizes and abides in such a truth, one is separated from self-interest and does everything that benefits other sentient beings. The better the realization, the greater the compassion for sentient beings. As the great scholar Vairochana said: Even if one realizes the meaning of no birth and no death...
