To extract the thorns, to dispel the desires of ignorance, to cross the river of existence, to guide bodhisattvas who are drowning in the swamp of desire, to keep in mind and diligently practice, to guide to the path of attaining omniscience, to generate great compassion, to cultivate the eye of wisdom, to develop the mind of enlightenment, to rely on the conduct of bodhisattvas, to teach the instructions of the pāramitās, to establish in the grounds of the ten bhūmis, to enable dwelling in all the Buddha's teachings. Thus and so on. Therefore, it is extremely important to rely on a spiritual friend who can lead one to the path of such well-being. In particular, the presentation here is of the Nyingma school of secret mantra, which teaches liberation in one lifetime and one body, so it is very important to examine it well. Sixth, the listener, the disciple, must be a suitable vessel. Regarding disciples, from the lineage as vast as the sky: "The truly definitive meaning is special. The great meaning of the definite result is: disrespectful to the lama, arrogant, hypocritical and slandering the lama, without offerings, therefore without instructions, stealing teachings and short-sighted, disrespectful to meaning and also to dharma, harboring jealousy and quarreling with dharma brothers, without view and with great clinging, not knowing selflessness and being self-righteous, saying 'I am clever' and slandering the lama, saying 'I have it from before' and being very arrogant, saying others have found it and stealing teachings, showing hypocrisy without instructions, deceiving with the means of saying 'I will offer later,' exploiting wealth and boasting, being full of flattery, desiring dharma through deceitful means, the essential pith instructions of definitive meaning are never taught." Although many extensive explanations are given, in brief, one needs to be someone with great faith and devotion, with few activities and diligent in practice, with peace and gentleness and patience, careful and practicing according to the instructions. As it says in the Longchen Nyingtik: "Having pure samaya and pure perception, the five poisons are weak, the mind is open, having faith, compassion, and great generosity, the mindstream is tamed, fearing evil, the senses are sharp, able to keep secrets, having experience, great asceticism, having renunciation, able to endure suffering, having perseverance, patient and relying on the teacher, such a person has great intelligence, suitable as a vessel for the heart essence of secret mantra." Thus it is said. Second, regarding relying on friends, as it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The root of the teachings is the three trainings."

Not guarding, listening to various unbiased affairs, pacifying the three doors and subduing one's own mindstream, increasing virtue and being wary of sin, generating faith with shame and embarrassment, relying on virtuous friends and companions, and being extremely affectionate to those who are beginners. Thus spoke the venerable teacher Shakya Od: The lama has respect and pure morality, is constantly diligent in meaning in meditation, is strict, gentle, and endowed with patience, abides in guarding vows, and is well-spoken in Dharma. Thus, if those who desire liberation, it is very important to abandon sinful friends and rely on virtuous friends, sinful friends are like poisonous trees, the more they are contacted, the more they will be contaminated by the poison of afflictions and suffer. Associating with those who are competitive and powerful will lead to the faults of being violent and abusive. Likewise, laziness, distraction, business profits, farming work, whatever actions are done in this life, associating with whatever, will be contaminated by the faults of whatever, like a rope of butter hindering liberation, these should be abandoned from afar. Moreover, being contaminated by the faults of sinful friends is like wind originally having no good or bad smell, but wind coming from corpses and impure places will be contaminated with bad smells, and wind coming from medicine, incense, and good smells will be accompanied by good smells, the analogy of faults and virtues is also like this, one should always rely on virtuous friends. If you like, these can be explained at the appropriate time, and other sutras, tantras, and treatises can be well explained and expounded. Eighth, the nature of the things that the teacher and disciple accomplish together is threefold: preparation, main part, and conclusion. First, preparation, to attain enlightenment for the benefit of sentient beings, for this, after generating the intention to listen to the Dharma, the one who teaches the Paramita Dharma is the Thuba, and the listeners should know the Thuba and the retinue, and for the retinue, know the respective differences of the fourfold retinue. Mantra should know the main deity and retinue of the mandala as one, and then listen. Or visualize the teacher as Manjushri, and from his mouth radiate the light of Dharma, visualize the light dissolving into the ears of the disciple in order to liberate them. Moreover, do not speak like someone who reads examples, but the words should be clear and the meaning easy to understand, the order of the definitive meaning.
