Remembering the deeds of the time of Songtsen Gampo, some sutras and tantras were translated from India, and the tradition of the ten virtues was established. Then, from the fifth royal lineage, Trisong Detsen, an incarnation of Manjushri, came and built temples in Tibet, invited great scholars including abbots and teachers from India, established the monastic community, translated and extensively propagated the Dharma of sutras and tantras, so the three ancestors are known to have been very kind to Tibet. In this Tibet, there are many stories of the rise and fall of Dharma, with early and later propagations, but they are not mentioned here. Fifth, the characteristics of the expounder and teacher are: here too, those who do not possess the characteristics of a lama, who pursue this life as important, who are very greedy for wealth and desires, who lead the faithful and those who are devoted to the Dharma onto the wrong path, who deceive others by means and do not even touch upon the true meaning, who are boastful and utter many empty words, and who claim to be accomplished even though they have not liberated their own minds. Such a hypocritical person cannot explain the meaning of Ati beyond the mind. In general, in the tantra that is equal to space, it is said: They pretend without instructions. If you want praise, hold onto the minds of others. Abandon meaning, cling to self, be jealous. Falsely cling, cling without attachment to meaning. Misunderstand the self-liberated enjoyment. It is called natural yoga. Staying in monasteries, they gather the faithful. They rely on flattering people with pretense. They give food to everyone with lip service. Engaging in worldly activities and enjoyment, demons have entered. Abandoning samadhi, they hold onto the minds of others. Hoping for offerings, they jump to high positions. Claiming to be religious practitioners, desiring praise. They enjoy the Dharma of nominal recitation. Abandoning the meaning of meditation, they strive for distraction. They cling to self with pride in all qualities. Great involvement in worldly affairs is self-deception and misery! And again it is said: Yogis who do not possess Dharma, who know various qualities, even if they have a little intelligence, deliberately do things for the benefit of others. The demon of distraction has entered their hearts. They abandon samadhi because of the praise of others. They teach Dharma, practice medicine and crafts. They say it is for the benefit of others to attain enlightenment. They develop attachment to desirable things. They deliberately do all kinds of activities. Distraction makes their own minds become demons. Separated from meaning, they fall into self-deception! Such a lama

Those who boast of their erudition and spend their time in cultural pursuits, abandoning the ultimate meaning of the supreme, and those teachers who are tormented by craving for food and wealth, deceiving the foolish with hypocrisy, deceit, and flattery—these teachers are also influenced by the blessings of demons. As it was said before: Without the definitive instructions, the shameless hypocrite, the deceitful one, is far from the noble path. Flattery and distorted teachings, the demon has entered. From the faithful fool, without instructions, they believe, acting hypocritically and pretending to be religious. Even without instructions, they say they have them. They say they have teachings to impart, but speak of them behind your back. Saying this, their craving for food and wealth is great. Deceiving themselves, they are objects of pity. In the next life, they will be born as hungry ghosts, born for the sake of their bellies. Furthermore, in the degenerate age, concealing their prideful selfishness, seeking Dharma in name only, entering the ranks of lamas, and teaching false Dharma to deceive beings is also very common. As it says in the Root Tantra: In this present age of decline, when deceptive teachings of various kinds are prevalent, those who have broken their vows and are skilled in flattery deceive others, saying they have unerring teachings. They feign humility and say they will bestow teachings on those who are qualified. They themselves have no foundation, yet they extort from great Khenpos, offering countless wealth and food, and then write and distribute false booklets of teachings, deceiving others by saying that they will give teachings if they offer enough wealth. They cannot deceive the wise, but they deceive all the foolish, which is truly pitiful. Speaking with flattery and lies, they speak of future times without any lineage of teachings. Lacking instructions themselves, they go searching for them elsewhere. If they don't find them, they slander and mock. If they find them, they say they will give them if you offer wealth. They deceive everyone, are disgusting, and are far from the Dharma. Deceiving one person is more sinful than killing a hundred beings. Therefore, do not teach worldly Dharma. Therefore, it is very important to abandon all such hypocritical and deceptive actions and to rely on a lama who possesses good qualities. As it says in the Gandavyuha Sutra: A spiritual friend shows all that should and should not be done, abandons even the slightest attachment to the world, prevents one from places of sin and recklessness, purifies all obscurations, liberates one from the city of samsara, cuts the snare of the demon, dispels the darkness of ignorance, cuts the bonds of views, and ends
