Pa. Cutting off the foundation, introduction, and the three. The first of these is: realizing the reality that has always been present in one lifetime and one body is due to the experienced lama and the student possessing faith. The oral tradition of the former masters says: "The coemergent (lhan cig skyes) that cannot be expressed by others, cannot be found anywhere. The lama reveals it through skillful means and timing, and it is known through one's own merit." Furthermore, the lama's profound skillful means and timing are very important. For a vessel-like student, pouring the instructions in the manner of whatever is done, the matter is accomplished without difficulty. Also, the scripture says: "Just as fire is known from smoke, and water is known from a ditch, the lineage of a wise bodhisattva is known from signs. The orb of the sun blazes with light, but fire does not arise without a fire crystal." Therefore, relying on the lama's instructions, the interdependent connection must be established like the meeting of a flint and tinder. Relying on the lama's words is the place of the path of blessings, it is the object of realization for those with faith, it is not the understanding of those who use words, it is not the knowledge of those who speculate. And so on, it is said in many scriptures. Now, in order to realize self-arisen wisdom, in a secluded place, abandoning outer and inner activities, on a comfortable seat, assuming the seven-point posture of Vairochana. From the instruction manuals of the new and old traditions, which are widely known as pith instructions: Do not cut off the past, do not welcome the future, do not fabricate the present awareness. Relax the three doors of body, speech, and mind. The physical posture is the seven-point posture of Vairochana, the speech is silent like a mute, and the way of settling the mind is like cutting off a self-flowing stream. The seven-point posture of Vairochana is: legs in the vajra posture, hands in the mudra of equipoise below the navel, arms spread like the wings of a vulture, spine straight like an arrow, eyes lowered to the tip of the nose, tongue touching the upper palate, throat slightly curved. The body is without leaning forward or backward, without bending or swaying, like a pillar placed inside a temple. The senses are relaxed in their natural state, the eyes are without squinting or not squinting, without being tense or stiff, not wide open, nor closed. The mouth and eyes are bright and clear, the doors of the senses are not blocked. Relax in terms of the body, as loose as untying a bundle of straw.

One should abide in this state. Ease, relaxation, and lightness, these three. The outer four elements are the method of placing the body. As it says in the "Vast Expanse of Clarity": The body should be still and slow. Speech should not speak, but remain in its own place. The mind should not wander, but be relaxed in its own nature. The two eyes should be half-closed, gazing into space. The mouth should be open just a little, with the teeth slightly apart, like sesame seeds can pass through. The three doors should have a slow wind, with the mind wandering out a little. Again, it says in the same text: The mind should not engage in memory and thought, and the two eyes should be focused on the tip of the nose. The mind should also be focused on the tip of the nose, gathered into one and placed in equanimity. When abiding in equanimity like this, how should one examine the nature of the object of abiding and the abider? The root of existence and non-existence should be skillfully severed. This mind is the doer of all actions. Which of the three, body, speech, and mind, is the most important? By examining well, the pleasure and pain of the body, heat and cold, hunger and fullness, and the grasping of the five senses are all the actions of the mind. The speech of the mouth and the acceptance and rejection are all contained in the mind. Therefore, it is determined that the mind is the most important. If one attains liberation upwards, happiness will arise. Wandering downwards in samsara, who is the doer who experiences suffering? Examine what this is like. Where does the body reside, at the head or the tail? Examine the resident and the place of residence. If the thought arises, "It resides here," then what is the color, shape, cause, condition, and size of the resident? Examine well. Searching inwardly, the place called "residing here" is not found. From where did the nature of the resident first arise? Now, the color, shape, and object of what is called "residing here" are not found, being separate from recognition and identification. Searching outwardly, where is it good to reside among the five great elements, Mount Meru, houses, sky, earth, and intermediate space? Examine carefully. If the nature and identification of the place of residence and the resident are not found as before, then non-abiding is abiding, which is said to be the place of the victorious ones. That which does not abide anywhere is also the best of abodes. As it says in the "Vast Expanse of Clarity": Then what is the abiding of the mind? If you ask if it exists, its nature is emptiness. If you ask if it does not exist, the observer is clear. Emptiness and clarity are free from recognition and identification. Thus, abiding in one's own mind, and searching for the inner and outer abodes of the mind, even if the nature of the resident is not found, how does this non-wandering, nine-wandering, discriminating thought, this wavering consciousness that follows the past, future, and present, move, and from where does it go? Does the nature of the goer go with existence or go from non-existence? If it goes from non-existence,
