I take refuge in the three: the Guru, Yidam, and Dakini! I take refuge in the three: Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya! I take refuge in the three: Essence, Nature, and Compassion! I take refuge in the Guru, the Buddha, the Dharmakaya! I take refuge in the Guru, the Sambhogakaya of perfect enjoyment! I take refuge in the Guru, the compassionate Nirmanakaya! I take refuge in the root Guru, the kind one! I take refuge in the lineage Guru, the blessed one! I take refuge in the guiding Guru, the compassionate one! I take refuge in all the deities of the Yidam mandala! I take refuge in the heroes, dakinis, and Dharma protectors! Thus, in a state of unwavering clarity, strive to recite as much as possible: hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, millions of times. Thirdly, the benefits of this are: temporarily, wishes are fulfilled, one enters the ranks of Buddhist practitioners, it becomes a basis for qualities, one is not harmed by humans or non-humans, and wherever one is born, one is born in the presence of the noble Guru and the Three Jewels, ultimately attaining Buddhahood. As it is said in the Sutra Ornament of the Victorious: "Whoever goes for refuge to the three, quickly attains Buddhahood." Thus it is. From the scriptures: "The qualities of the Buddha are inconceivable, the sacred Dharma is also inconceivable, the noble Sangha is inconceivable. Having faith in the inconceivable, the ripening is also inconceivable, one will be born in a pure land." Thus it is. The benefits of taking refuge cannot be enumerated even by the tongue of the Buddha. Is there no other refuge besides this? If one asks, are worldly gods, parents, children, kings, relatives, etc., not refuges? The answer is no. Because they can only protect temporarily, and do not have the compassion and ability to ultimately protect. Because they are worldly people, they are like those who cannot guide one on a bad path. The worldly gods such as Indra, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, the four great gods, are also not ultimate refuges. How is it said? "If one goes for refuge to mountains, rocks, forests, as well as gardens, trees, and stupas, these are not supreme refuges. Relying on these refuges, one cannot escape the realm of samsara, and suffering and afflictions will not cease. Only by taking refuge in the Three Jewels can one escape."

One will attain the state of no place (Nirvana). All happiness and auspiciousness will arise. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by the Daughter Jewel, it says: When the time of death arrives, Children will not be protectors, Neither youth nor strength, One will go as one desires. Thus it is said. In the Vinaya, it says: When the messengers of Yama come, Parents are not your protectors, Neither relatives nor kin, All of them will abandon you, You alone will go to the next life. Therefore, the refuge is the non-deceptive Three Jewels. Fourth, what should be abandoned is: Having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, one should know the distinction between what to adopt and what to abandon. That is, having taken refuge in the Lama, one should respect virtuous friends and not rely on sinful companions. Having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should not prostrate to worldly deities such as the Tirthika god Ishvara. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should not harm sentient beings. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one should not associate with Tirthikas or those who deny cause and effect. As it says in the Sutra Banner: Those who have taken refuge in the Buddha, Should never rely on other gods, Nor go for refuge. Those who have taken refuge in the Dharma, Should be free from the mind of harming and injuring. Those who have taken refuge in the Sangha, Should not associate with Tirthikas. Thus it is said. Fifth, the precepts to be adopted are: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should regard Buddha images, whether cast or painted, and even fragments of stupas and tsha-tshas, as the body of the Buddha, and generate faith, respect, and devotion. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should regard scriptures, books, the Kangyur, and even scraps of paper, as the sacred Dharma, and strive to study, offer, and praise them. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one should regard virtuous spiritual friends, the great Sangha community, and even those who wear yellow robes, as the Sangha, and treat them with honor, service, and respect, without disbelief, disrespect, contempt, or judgment, and regard them as one's Yidam. Second, generating Bodhicitta: That is, as it says in the Tantra: Loving-kindness and compassion are the common path of Dharma, For the sake of entering the Great Vehicle. This has five aspects: Aspiration, Engagement, Actual generation of Bodhicitta, Precepts, Benefits. The first has three: Aspiration.
