Abandoning what should be abandoned should also be abandoned. Some people start one virtuous activity but then begin another before finishing the first, resulting in neither being completed; this should also be abandoned. Some people lack unwavering faith in one profound Dharma and one root guru, engaging in whatever is convenient; this should also be abandoned. Some people's faith arises slightly due to circumstances, but when those circumstances diminish even a little, they suddenly change; this should also be abandoned. First, one should examine, and once Dharma and guru have been chosen, one should practice with unwavering devotion and respect, unaffected by external hardships or fluctuations. How to make faith steadfast? The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury states: "First, examine well the objects of faith, then be unchangeable like the king of mountains, without increase or decrease like the sun, sky, and ocean, without looseness or tightness like a bowstring, without weariness like a bridge, without interruption like a great river, possessing suppleness like a silk rope, not stolen by circumstances like the sky." This means that noble individuals seek a guru and Dharma by first examining and contemplating. Having found them, unwavering faith is like the king of mountains; faith without increase or decrease is like the sun; faith without depth is like the ocean; faith without contrivance is like a mother; faith without end is like the sky; faith without looseness is like a drawn bowstring; faith that is not stolen by others' transformations or scolding is like the sky; faith without weariness is like a bridge; faith without interruption is like a river. Faith adorned with respect, suppleness, and humility is like a silk rope; one should rely on faith possessing these ten qualities. Such faith has countless qualities; to summarize, it is the foundation of all white dharmas, eliminates all the suffering of samsara, grasps the path to liberation, becomes a vessel for profound Dharma, is constantly remembered by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, possesses shame and embarrassment, is endowed with wisdom and other qualities, is born in pure Buddhafields, and in every lifetime does not separate from the noble guru, the noble Dharma, and noble friends.

Wherever we meet, may we practice the Dharma, and be protected by the gods who delight in the white Dharma. May we fall asleep in peace, and in our dreams, may we dream of auspicious visions of the Lama, the Yidam, and the practice of Dharma, and may we awaken in peace. May all our wishes be fulfilled, and may we live our lives in peace, with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas guiding us on the path of bliss. May all the fears of the Bardo be eliminated, and may we be reborn in the place we desire, inheriting the lineage of the Buddhas. May we quickly attain the state of Buddhahood. The vast benefits are inexhaustible, even if spoken of for countless eons. In the "Lamp of the Three Jewels" it says: 'What is the merit of faith in this Dharma, compared to honoring and serving all sentient beings in the ten directions as numerous as dust particles for countless eons with all kinds of happiness? This superior merit is not found in that.' Therefore, in order to increase the six kinds of faith mentioned earlier a hundredfold in the six objects, one should also combine these six faiths with the ten virtues, the ten perfections, the Lamas of the ten directions, the Three Jewels, and the assembly of sentient beings. May the lotus petals of faith bloom in thousands. Secondly, the uncommon, first, taking refuge. It is divided into five parts: identifying the object of refuge, taking refuge, benefits, what to abandon, and the precepts to be adopted. The first part is divided into four: outer, inner, secret, and ultimate. The first of these is divided into three: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Buddha, in terms of etymology, has eliminated the delusion of 'scattering,' and for 'scattered,' it is the realization of the nature of reality, vast wisdom, and skillful in great compassion and means. Second, the Dharma has three aspects: its essence is extremely white, its characteristic is to protect from falling, and its classification is either cause and effect, or the three pitakas, or the nine vehicles. Third, the Sangha also has three aspects: its essence is separated from non-virtue, its etymology is the intention of virtue, and its classification is the outer Sangha of form and signs, the Sangha of generating the mind of benefiting others, and the Sangha of true meaning. The Sutra says: 'Take refuge in the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as the companion.' Second, the inner, are the Lama, Yidam, and Dakini. Among them, the Lama refers to one who has liberated himself and is skilled in the means of maturing others, such as Orgyen Padmasambhava, who is the source of all blessings.
