It is also like a good boatman, who can lead people to the island of liberation. The Jewel Lamp Sutra says: With faith, one abandons the absence of leisure and attains the supreme leisure; with faith, one transcends the path of demons; it increases the gate of special wisdom; it is the supreme one who shows the path of liberation. Thus it is said. With faith, one's wishes are fulfilled, like a jewel. As it says in the same sutra: Faith is the best of treasures, wealth, and feet; faith makes one happy to give completely; faith is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, giving what is needed and desired. Thus it is said. Faith is like a hero, destroying non-virtue. In the Ocean-Asked Sutra, it says: With faith, one obtains the power of devotion to the Buddhas and so on, and the power of entering into faith in karma and its ripening, and the power of not abandoning the mind of enlightenment, and the power of relying on the deity for practice, and the power of abandoning all non-virtue and enduring all wrongdoings. Thus it is said. Because faith abandons the absence of leisure and gathers virtuous dharmas, the person with faith is rarer because he is more excellent than others. As it says in the same sutra: Faith has no attachment to the gate of attachment. It is the best of abandoning the absence of leisure and obtaining leisure. Faith is the cause of obtaining the rank of the victorious ones. Those who have faith in such a dharma are rare in their respective assemblies of beings. Thus it is said. Therefore, faith is the first of the seven noble riches, and having it is the most excellent. In the Inconceivable Secret Sutra, it says: They possess faith, joy, devotion, and an unblemished mind, without doubt about karma and its ripening, without hesitation or double-mindedness, possessing devotion, realization, and conviction, knowing that the deeds of good and evil and their ripening are not wasted, and even for the sake of life, they do not commit evil deeds, but practice the ten paths of virtuous deeds, increasing enjoyment through generosity, obtaining higher realms through morality, increasing wisdom through learning, and increasing all qualities through meditation. Thus it is said. The fault of not having faith is: those without liberation, those without merit, have no faith at all. Its faults are extremely limitless. The non-believer without the merit of Dharma, even without faith as small as a sesame seed, has immeasurable faults. Briefly speaking, it is like coral not appearing on the bottom of the ocean.

Therefore, without faith, it is impossible to reach the dry land of liberation. Just as a boat without oars cannot reach the other shore, without faith, it is impossible to be delivered from the river of suffering. Just as a person with empty hands cannot take anything even if they go to a gold mine, without faith, it is impossible to attain qualities in one's mindstream. Similarly, just as a seed that has been burned by fire will not sprout, without faith, it is impossible for the sprout of enlightenment to be born. Just as a blind person entering a temple cannot see, without faith, it is impossible to see the appearance of Dharma. Just as a she-wolf trapped in a conch shell, without faith, whatever one does will turn into the karma of samsara, so it is never possible to attain the enlightenment of liberation, there is such a fault. In the "Ten Dharmas Sutra" it says: "For those without faith, white dharmas will not arise." Therefore, without faith, the loss is great, so faith must be generated. Then, the places where faith arises are: The six places where faith in white Dharma arises are: The faith of desire arises from seeing the nature of samsara. The faith of aspiration arises from feeling aversion to sinful friends. The faith of respect arises from wonderful objects of veneration. The faith of joy arises from hearing about excellent objects of veneration or stories. The faith of trust arises from hearing about cause and effect. The faith of thinking about Dharma arises from hearing about profound teachings. If these have not arisen, then one should focus on the nature of those places and cause them to arise. The way to cultivate and increase faith in one's mindstream is: By relying on an excellent lama and generating devotion from the depths of one's heart, it increases. It increases by relying on special friends who are in harmony with the Dharma and one's own mindstream. It increases by reading profound sutras and tantras. It increases by contemplating death without distraction. It increases by seeing and hearing stories of karma and its effects. It increases by doing more extensive sessions of profound meditation practice than before. It increases from inconceivable secrets. This is because one does not engage in wrongdoing and performs actions praised by the noble ones. Therefore, all of these must be increased day by day, in every way. One must know and abandon the causes of the decline of faith, that is, when one is possessed by a demon, as a sign of being blessed, scrutinizing the faults of one's lama and spiritual friend, observing the misconduct of practitioners in general, associating with ordinary friends, and the practice of
