Outwardly obscured beings, even when seeing good things, feel thirsty. Inwardly obscured beings have their lungs and hearts ablaze. Common obscurations involve food and drink being fixated upon in the mind. Even after twelve years, the sound of water is not heard. They appear to be both harmed and guarded by others. Always desiring only food and drink due to hunger, they are known as pretas (hungry ghosts). If categorized, there are three types. For those with outward obscurations, even pleasant places appear unpleasant. Seeing medicinal trees, forests, and great rivers only increases thirst, and things like charcoal appear delicious. Even the seasons are inverted. As stated in the "Friendly Epistle": "For pretas, the moon in summer is hot, and the sun in winter is cool." For those with inward obscurations, fire blazes from within, burning all internal organs, and smoke and flames billow from the mouth. The common obscuration is that, due to craving food and drink, they cannot endure hunger, yet even after twelve years, they do not hear the sound of water, and even when they see water, they remain thirsty. Because they appear to be guarded, they have no control over its use. Their bodies are as large as Mount Meru, but their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle. Even if a small amount of blessed nasal mucus or impurities discarded by monks and Brahmins enters their mouths, they first experience the suffering of not being able to enter, and then the suffering of being burned by fire. Even if they drink the great ocean, it does not reach their throats, and they are parched by the poison in their mouths. On top of immeasurable suffering, they are harmed by others, and their bodies and minds are greatly afflicted. As stated in the "Admonition to Students": "With a mouth as small as the eye of a needle, they must climb many yojanas. Wretched, with large bellies, even if they drink the water of the great ocean, it does not reach the vast depths of their throats. The poison in their mouths even dries up the moisture of the water." Their lifespan is such that one day for a preta is equivalent to one hundred human years, and they experience suffering for five hundred years. One hundred human years are counted as one day for a preta, so they live for five hundred years. As stated in the "Friendly Epistle": "Some beings bound by the strong noose of misdeeds do not die even after five thousand or ten thousand years." This also refers to human years. The third realm of the lower realms is that of animals. The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury states: Animals also devour one another.

Suffering from harm and exploitation, killing and slaughter, many sufferings. The lifespan is uncertain, with kalpas and so on. As it says, generally speaking, animals living in the ocean have different shapes and forms, like the sediment of beer, scattered in the abodes of gods and humans, birds and wild animals, horses, cattle, livestock, sheep, etc., these eat each other, harm each other, are killed for their skin, bones, and meat, are used for plowing, milking, wool, etc., and are loaded with unbearable weights, etc., the suffering is endless. The lifespan is also uncertain, some dragons have a lifespan of one kalpa, while others have a lifespan of only a moment. Even in the heavens there is no happiness, for now, in each of the four continents, humans also have no opportunity for happiness. As it says in the same place: Birth, old age, sickness, and death, enemies and harm are many, Separation from loved ones, poverty due to desires, experiencing unpleasant things, Desires cannot be fulfilled, suffering from heat, cold, fatigue, Repaying kindness with harm, not knowing gratitude. Retinues follow wrong paths, meaningless jealousy, No praise, meaningless slander, immeasurable. As it says, in the human realm, whether large or small, all suffer immeasurable harm in proportion to their size, especially in general, there is birth, old age, being afflicted by severe diseases, death, encountering hateful enemies, being robbed and attacked in life, suffering harm, separation from beloved relatives, being unable to fulfill desires for wealth and children, poverty, unpleasant things like diseases and evil spirits befalling them, desires for wealth, residence, and fame not being fulfilled, suffering from heat and cold in work and on the road, fatigue from burdens and tasks, those who have shown kindness instead inflict harm, not knowing gratitude, for great people and virtuous spiritual friends, retinues and disciples also do various discordant things, disturbing their minds, being meaninglessly envied by others, being maliciously proclaimed, the mental anxiety caused by slander, etc., the suffering is immeasurable. The lifespan is uncertain, in places with unpleasant sounds there is a thousand-year lifespan, in the other three continents there are mostly untimely deaths, especially for the people of Jambudvipa, there are many sudden deaths, so it is impossible to determine when one will die. The Asuras living in the hollow of Mount Meru also have anger and strife,
