Being burned and boiled, pierced by spears and tridents, etc., the body from head to toe is wrapped by burning iron, etc., the suffering is immeasurable. That place's, the sixteen surrounding neighbors on the four outer sides are: rotten mud and impassable rivers, hair-blade fields and sword-leaf forests, and thorny trees all around, where hell beings experience various sufferings. The surroundings of Avici Hell are rotten mud, where the former hell beings open the door and enter, pierced by many worms with iron and copper beaks, eating flesh and bones. From there, thinking they have escaped, they go out, and in the hot, impassable river of ashes, flesh and bones are burned. As stated in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'Sinking in the impassable river like a pit of fire, all flesh decays, and the pile of bones is the color of Kunda flowers.' On both banks, Yama's messengers seem to guard, so there is no escape. At the end of the escape route, when the foot is placed on the hair-blade field, it is cut, and when lifted, it revives and continues. In the sword-leaf forest, all the branches and leaves of the trees have turned into swords, cutting the body. Thorny mountain, relying on iron thorns to climb up and down, there they are eaten by dogs and birds, etc. These each have four surrounding in the four directions, so they are called sixteen surrounding. The suffering in between is explained in the Mindfulness Sutra. The temporary places and forms are not fixed, in the ocean, mountains, trees, space, houses, and rocks, etc., experiencing the suffering of using the forms of sentient beings, stones, trees, brooms, utensils, mats, and cushions, etc. Not cutting grass is also considering this. The lifespan of those hells is: lifespan in the six hells such as Revival, etc., is the same as the lifespan and days and nights of the desire realm gods, able to live to their own years. The extremely hot hell can live for half a intermediate kalpa, and Avici Hell can stay for one intermediate kalpa. As mentioned before, in order, adding up the years of the lifespan of the six desire realm gods, these six (hells) such as Revival, etc., are calculated as one day, able to live to their own years. For example,

The Four Great Kings consider one day of five hundred years of rejuvenation as one day, and can live for five hundred years. The thousand years of the Thirty-three Heavens, the two thousand years of the Yama Heavens, the four thousand years of the Tushita Heavens, the eight thousand years of the Nirmanarati Heavens, and the sixty thousand years of the Paranirmita-vasavartin Heavens, each calculated as one day, the Black Line Hell can live for a thousand years, the Samghata Hell can live for two thousand years, the Raurava Hell can live for four thousand years, the Maha Raurava Hell can live for eight thousand years, the Tapana Hell can live for sixty thousand years, the Pratapa Hell can live for half a kalpa, and the Avici Hell can live for one kalpa. As stated in the Abhidharmakosa: 'The six, such as Rejuvenation, are in order the same as the lifespan and days of the desire gods.' etc. The cold hells are said to reside adjacent to these. When snow and blizzard arise, it is extremely cold, and sentient beings suffer endlessly. With snow and blizzard intertwined, there are eight hells in the extremely cold land. Due to the cold, blisters the size of thumbs appear, which is the Blister Hell. These blisters burst and fester, which is the Burst Blister Hell. Named Achu Hell because of the sound of cold 'Achu'. Named Kyihu Hell because only the sound 'Kyihu' can be made. Unable to make a sound, stiff and teeth clenched, is the Teeth Clenched Hell. The body splits into four petals, blooming like a lotus, is the Lotus-like Bursting Hell. The wounds turn inside out, connected by thin water veins, is the Blue Lotus-like Bursting Hell. Splitting into sixteen, thirty-two, or hundreds and thousands of petals, is the Great Lotus-like Bursting Hell. The lifespan of these hells is: From a pile of sesame seeds that can fill a hundred carts, one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years, until the sesame seeds are all gone, this is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespan of the remaining hells increases twentyfold. As stated in the Abhidharmakosa: 'From a sesame pile, one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years, until it is all gone, this is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespan of the remaining hells increases twentyfold.' and so on. Next is the second destination of the evil realms: the Pretas, suffering from the torment of hunger and thirst, in great pain.
