Being instructed to transform into what is conducive to liberation, as it is said in the Jewel Treasury: "Virtue or merit is the cause of conforming to samsara, turn away from that and cultivate what is conducive to liberation. In order to abandon samsara, one should abandon its cause." If one does not desire samsara, then one must abandon its cause. Therefore, from being helplessly drawn into conditioned existence, abandon both non-virtue and virtue-merit, and strive solely for what is conducive to liberation. Merit is the cause of conditioned existence, and in essence belongs to the category of non-virtue. The teacher Nagarjuna said: "From virtue comes happiness, from non-virtue comes suffering, liberation does not rely on either of the two." Thus it is said. Concluding with the instruction to practice the virtue that is conducive to liberation, it is said in the same text: "The five perfections with appearance, along with merit, and the two accumulations of wisdom and knowledge, should be cultivated." Thus, one who desires to quickly attain Buddhahood should cultivate its cause, which is the perfection of skillful means with appearance, the five accumulations of merit such as generosity, and the perfection of wisdom without appearance, cultivating the wisdom accumulation of the emptiness of reality. As it is said in the Garland of Jewels: "Therefore, these two accumulations are the cause of attaining Buddhahood, therefore, one should always cultivate them." Thus it is said. Therefore, skillful means and wisdom must be united, for holding that emptiness of mind alone is sufficient is not a good path. In the Sutra of Gathering All Distinctions, it is said: "Maitreya! If foolish people say that only wisdom is the path, then my practice of the five perfections over many eons would become meaningless." Also, in the Sutra Requested by Anavatapta, it is said: "The work of a Bodhisattva's demon is wisdom without skillful means, and skillful means without wisdom." Also, in the Sutra Requested by Ocean of Intelligence, it is said: "There is no cause, and there is no manifestation without cause, if one does not strive in the five perfections, then one who is fully endowed with wisdom is the iron hook of the demon, the sixth demon. If one does not escape from that iron hook of the demon, then there is no need to even mention the attainment of perfect enlightenment, there is no place for it." Also, in the Sutra of Stainless Fame, it is said: "A Bodhisattva who relies solely on wisdom is a Shravaka."
