Engaging in sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, idle chatter, harsh language, covetousness, malice, and wrong views – these are the ten non-virtuous actions. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakosha): "Killing is intentional; without error, it is killing another. Taking what is not given is taking another's wealth, by force or stealth, making it one's own. Desiring to engage in what is not proper, sexual misconduct has four aspects. Lying is speech that alters understanding; the meaning of the words is clearly understood. Divisive speech is speech that separates others; harsh language is speaking unpleasant words; idle chatter is spreading all afflictions. Covetousness is like an evil doctrine, clinging to the wealth of others with wrong thoughts. Malice is hating sentient beings; viewing good and non-good as non-existent is wrong view." Thus it is. Engaging in these ten non-virtuous actions in a small way leads to rebirth as an animal, in a medium way as a hungry ghost, and in a great way to experiencing the suffering of hell. This is the result of complete maturation (vipaka). The result that corresponds to the cause (hetu-phala) is that one is born in the place where one commits the non-virtuous action, and experiencing its result leads to a short life, and so on. The dominating result (adhipati-phala) is that in the land there are thorns and fruits that do not ripen, and so on. If we speak of these in brief, the result of complete maturation is weak, and one is liberated from the lower realms. Even if one obtains a human body or heavenly realm, one still experiences its suffering. As previously stated: "Killing leads to a short life and many diseases; taking what is not given leads to poverty and destitution; sexual misconduct leads to a household filled with enemies." Therefore, due to the remaining results of karma, even if one is born in a heavenly realm, one still has a short life and many diseases, is poor, and has a household that is discordant or enjoys sexual misconduct. The actions of speech, as stated in that same text: "Lying leads to much slander; divisive speech separates friends and causes mutual discord; harsh language is unpleasant, and idle chatter is not dignified." As it is said, even if one has no faults, one is still often slandered, separated from friends, and one's retinue is discordant. One always hears unpleasant words, and no one believes one's words. These are the results of the four evil actions of speech. The actions of mind, as stated in that same text: "Covetousness leads to unfulfilled desires in the mind; malice is accompanied by fear, and wrong views lead to evil views." Thus, what one thinks does not come to pass, one is always fearful and apprehensive, and one is born into a lineage that slanders the results of karma. These are the non-virtuous actions of mind.

These are the results of (non-virtuous actions). The "Ratnavali" says: "Killing causes a short life. Stealing what is not given leads to loss of wealth. Adultery brings many enemies. Lying results in much slander. Divisive speech separates friends. Harsh words cause one to hear unpleasant things. Idle talk makes one's speech unreliable. Covetousness destroys hope in the mind. Harmful intent bestows fear. Wrong views are the very nature of wrong views." Thus it is said. The former (Ratnavali) says: "Therefore, these ten non-virtuous actions are like poison. Those with minds and wisdom should thoroughly abandon them." One must abandon non-virtuous actions in both public and private, because whoever commits non-virtuous actions will experience the harsh results of their maturation. As stated in the "Bodhicharyavatara": "Sins committed unseen, like poison entering the body, will not bring happiness. It is impossible for gods, yogis, and those with pure eyes not to see them." Thus it is said. Now, explaining the virtues that are in harmony with liberation. The former (Ratnavali) itself says: "The path to liberation is to achieve enlightenment and peace, to transcend existence, and to abandon suffering." Therefore, the virtues that cause liberation transcend samsara and abandon suffering. As it says in the same text: "Those who have entered the path of the three vehicles should diligently practice: their respective bodhicitta, meditate on the four immeasurables, practice the six paramitas, and cultivate the aspects of enlightenment. Day and night, they strive to transform into virtue." The person who generates the mind to seek the path of the Hearers, from meditating on the first mindfulness to complete practice, is a small person. The Pratyekabuddha is the intermediate one who enters the path. Generating the mind for the Great Vehicle is the great practice of the path. After each of the three types of individuals generates their respective minds, they practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and those who diligently engage in virtue day and night, encompassed by the four immeasurables and the six perfections, and sealed with dedication, are called virtues in harmony with liberation. Among these, the four immeasurables are: May all sentient beings who do not have happiness be endowed with happiness—this is loving-kindness May those who are tormented by suffering be separated from it—this is compassion May those who have happiness never be separated from it—this is joy (藏文:དགའ་བ།,梵文天城体:मुदिता,梵文罗马拟音:muditā,汉语字面意思:喜悦);Equanimity (藏文:བཏང་སྙོམས།,梵文天城体:उपेक्षा,梵文罗马拟音:upekṣā,汉语字面意思:舍弃) is to have an equal mind towards those who are close, distant, attached, or hateful. The "Ornament of the Sutras" says: "Loving-kindness towards sentient beings"
