Like a raft on water, a bridge over a difficult passage, a platform on a dangerous place, a lamp in the dark, a boat on the great ocean, wealth for the poor, a friend for the worker, a tool for the cutter, armor for entering the battlefield, a good escort for the fearful, allies for the fighter, grain for the famine, guidance for the doubtful, a place for the wanderer, and protection for the guilty. Thus it is said. In this way, through examples and reasoning, one should remember death in all activities such as walking, moving, sleeping, and sitting. In all activities such as eating, moving, sleeping, and sitting, one should remember only death in one's mind. When walking, because the movement of the steps is impermanent, encourage oneself to abide in the Buddha-ground. When sitting, because the place is impermanent, encourage oneself to abide in the unchanging ground. When standing, because standing is impermanent, encourage oneself to stand in the state of equanimity. Eating and drinking are impermanent, so encourage oneself to take the food of samadhi. The dwelling is impermanent, so encourage oneself to abide in the palace of Dharmakaya equanimity. Contraction is impermanent, so encourage oneself to contract conditioned activities. Extension is impermanent, so encourage oneself to freely enjoy the transcendent appearances. Sleeping is impermanent, so encourage oneself to sleep in the state of reality. When advancing, the path is impermanent, so encourage oneself to enter the path of Bodhi. The sound of fear is impermanent, so encourage oneself to conquer the enemy of afflictions. The words spoken are impermanent, so encourage oneself to recite. The farming activities are impermanent, so encourage oneself to constantly abide in Dharma practice. Food and drink are impermanent, so encourage oneself to offer to the mandala of the deities. Wealth is impermanent, so encourage oneself to accumulate the seven noble riches. Great fame is impermanent, so encourage oneself to always remain in a humble position. Desired objects are impermanent, so encourage oneself to engage in the accumulation of the two accumulations. Sentient beings are impermanent, so encourage oneself to place them on the path of Bodhi. Sudden death is impermanent, so encourage oneself to seize the fortress of immortality. Bathing and cleansing are impermanent, so encourage oneself to purify obscurations with the four powers. The five poisons and afflictions are impermanent, so encourage oneself to realize self-arisen wisdom.

Since appearances are impermanent, urge the pure Buddha-fields. Since fame and sound are impermanent, urge the proclamation of the Dharma's melody. Since the thoughts of awareness are impermanent, urge the increase of the wisdom of abandonment and realization. From the Hundred Deeds Sutra: "Always, in all places of enjoyment, remember the Lord of Death." And from the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "Day and night, I should only think of this." And from the Nirvana Sutra: "Among all fields that are cultivated, the harvest of autumn is the best. Among all footprints, the footprint of the king of cows is the best. Among all thoughts, the thought of impermanence and death is the best. This reverses all thoughts of the three realms." And from the Vinaya: "Better than giving umbrellas and provisions to a hundred monks is a moment of thinking about the impermanence of compounded things." Now, the signs and measures of habituation to that are shown. From the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury: "The measure of habituation is seeing compounded things as decaying, being diligent, abandoning fear and the activities of this life, not staying even for a moment in ordinariness, and having a narrow mind of renunciation and weariness." Therefore, from thinking about impermanence day and night, seeing any appearance as decaying, a mind of non-attachment to external objects arises from the depths of the heart, and a mind of diligence in virtue arises like a burning fire, and a unique fear and dread of the suffering of samsara arises from the heart, and knowing that one cannot escape death, one abandons the activities of this life, and not staying even for a moment in ordinariness, one practices the Dharma with the three doors, and seeing the ripening of karmic results, renunciation and weariness arise, and knowing that one does not know when one will die, one does not cling to anything. These are the signs and measures of habituation to impermanence from the depths of the heart. Now, concluding with the benefits of habituation to that, from the same text: "Its benefits are extremely limitless, abandoning the faults of samsara, qualities naturally gather, liberation from the clinging to permanence, pacifying enemies, friends, attachment, and hatred, striving greatly in virtue, knowing this life to be a mistake, perfectly completing the two accumulations, being famous, seen by the gods, passing away in bliss, going to the higher realms, quickly attaining the deathless
