Having seen examples of death, those beings who do not understand that they too will die are truly foolish! Just as seeing the sun, moon, and lamps extinguished, even when the appearances of this life vanish, one should contemplate impermanence, thinking that the clinging to the self-luminous mind will also disappear. As it says in that very text: The sun, moon, stars, and planets are moved by the wind, and the flame of a lamp is swayed by the wind. This life does not stay for even a moment, so strive to accomplish any great task. Thus it is said. Because the nature of reality is a protector, it is advised to rely on it. In the "Treasury of Precious Qualities," it says: At the time of death, the best protectors are the Three Jewels and the accumulation of merit. One should rely on the holy ones and strive to accomplish the essential meaning. At the time of death and on the dangerous path of the bardo, the refuge and protector are the holy lama with the qualities previously described, the supreme Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and the supreme yidam—the mandala of peaceful and wrathful deities and the assembly of dakinis, who lead the way and remove obstacles, in order to place one on the level of great bliss and liberation. Therefore, from this very moment, one should strive with great diligence to rely on these three. Moreover, what is certain to be exhausted by relying on it is a virtuous friend, so one must rely on the holy lama without separation. What is certain to be exhausted by a place of refuge is the Three Jewels, so one must take refuge in these three. What is certain to be exhausted by farming is Dharma practice, so one must engage in virtuous activities without partiality. What is certain to be exhausted by resources is the two accumulations, so one must constantly accumulate them without laziness. What is certain to be exhausted by a dwelling is meditation, so one must build the fortress of shamatha and vipashyana. What is certain to be exhausted by a friend is a person endowed with Dharma, so one must associate with Dharma companions with respect. What is certain to be exhausted by a fruit is the three kayas, so one must diligently accomplish Buddhahood. As it says in the "Sutra on Admonishing the King": King, at that time and at that moment, the Dharma will be an island, a dwelling, a protector, and a refuge. For example, for those afflicted by cold, fire is; for those afflicted by heat, a cool pavilion is; for those afflicted by thirst, cool water is; for a weary and exhausted guest, shade is; for someone traveling a long road, a vehicle is; for someone sleeping, a good bed is; for someone hungry, delicious food is; for someone suffering, satisfaction is; for someone lost on the road, a guide is; for someone afflicted by illness, a doctor is; for someone sinking in mud, a rope is; for someone carried away by a flood
