Is boundless. Accompanied by the sound of change and transition. How can we not die? Thus it is said. Furthermore, just as a horse is startled, a sheep jumps, livestock run, or a bird flies, death suddenly arrives, seizing all these beings. The Wise and Foolish Sutra says: The end of accumulation is exhaustion, the end of gathering is separation, the end of action is destruction, and the end of living is death. The Extensive Play Sutra says: Death seizes hundreds and thousands of living beings, like the makara fish in the ocean for sentient beings. For nagas, it is like the garuda; for elephants, it is like the lion; for grass and trees, it is like fire. Death makes the powerful powerless, death takes life, like a flood pushing wood. People leave alone, without companions, without friends. When the fruit ripens, one loses autonomy. The Nirvana Sutra says: Even if life is long, it will inevitably perish in the end. Therefore, everything will inevitably die here. Wealth declines, youth is destroyed by old age, beauty is ruined by disease, and life is cut off by death. Thus it is said. Because one does not know when death will come, one must contemplate the certainty of death. Because there is no decrease or increase, one does not know when death will come. The passing of days and nights, months and years, morning and evening, only brings one closer to death. Aging only decreases life and does not increase it. Like the shadow of the setting sun, life is decreasing. Like a granary being emptied, life is being exhausted. Like a leak in a pond, life is flowing away. Similarly, like clouds dissipating in the sky, like water flowing down a cliff, one arrives at the city of Yama, the Lord of Death. Like small rivers flowing into the ocean, like a giant shooting an arrow, like leading beings to the slaughterhouse, life is decreasing, and death is certain. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: This life is constantly subject to harm, accompanied by no increase but only decrease, how can we not die? Thus it is said. Like cotton being burned to ashes, it vanishes in an instant. Like water leaking from the palm, one does not notice even when it is exhausted, which is a great fault. The great Brahmin Saraha said: Look, a beautiful face, the palm filled with water, like water leaking away, one does not notice aging. Thus it is said. Moreover, because there is no fixed time for life, one will die. Because of obstacles caused by cliffs, waterfalls, weapons, poison, ghosts, etc., the time of death is also uncertain. Even without obstacles, one will die in an instant.

Life is short and death is certain. From the Compendium of Special Expositions: Some die in their mother's womb, some die immediately after birth, some die just as they begin to toddle, likewise some die just as they begin to run, some are old and some are young, some are people who have reached their prime. These will die in succession, so do not think that this person is young, who can be sure of living? Like fruit on a tree that ripens, sentient beings will surely die. And from the Past: The life of living beings is destroyed by demons, there is nothing that is permanent. And from the former: Constantly afflicted by disease, constantly oozing with impurities, as old age and death diminish life, what good is the body, which is so wretched? From the Bodhisattva Pitaka: There are nine causes of sudden death: eating unsuitable food, eating too much even when full, eating the next meal before the previous one is digested, suppressing the urge to urinate and defecate, the patient not listening to the doctor and nurse, going out at night and being struck by fierce spirits and demons, suppressing vomiting after taking emetics, engaging in strenuous activities without proper examination, and engaging in sexual intercourse with women without restraint. So it is said. In the Sutra of Medicine, the nine other things that the doctor uses that are not medicine are also included here. Therefore, there are many causes of death, and one may die while doing something or in the middle of doing something, so one cannot rely on the thought that one will not die now. At the time of death, nothing follows except good and bad deeds, so no one goes empty-handed. From the Sutra of Advice to the King: Great King, the lives of people are short and transient, so you should regard the fear of the next world. When death comes and the king departs, wealth, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever beings go from wherever, karma will follow like a shadow. And from the Compendium of Special Expositions: This task is done, now I will do this, after those are finished, I will do this, when people think like that, they are overcome by old age, sickness, and death. So it is said. At that time, no appearance of this life can be retained, so it is shown to be weary. From the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury: Death
