Like lightning flashing across the sky, life is fleeting; like water flowing rapidly down a steep mountain, it passes quickly. As stated in the Nirvana Sutra: "Life is always surrounded by many enemies, diminishing with each moment, without any increase." The previous text also says: "Like a pond that has lost its source of water, only depletion without replenishment, how can my life be said to be eternal?" From the moment it appears, samsara is already established as having the nature of impermanence of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, we are taught to generate renunciation. The Wish-Fulfilling Treasury states: "Various containers and beings, although they exist, are like illusions and banana trees, without essence. Therefore, this world called samsara, no one can truly possess, grasp, and abandon." All beings that appear as the container and its contents, all wealth and the deceptive appearances of samsara, all suffering and happiness are impermanent. The Extensive Play Sutra says: "Conditioned phenomena are not stable, but impermanent, like unbaked pottery, destined to perish. Coveting the possessions of others is like building a house of sand, destined to collapse." The Sutra Requested by King Srimālā says: "Life has no support, impermanent and moving, like a clay pot, destined to break." Therefore, all conditioned dharmas of samsara are impermanent and without essence. The Extensive Play Sutra says: "The pleasures of desire are fleeting, like illusions and mirages, false and unreal, like bubbles of water, without essence. Know that all arise from conceptual thought." Therefore, generate renunciation towards the certainty of destruction. The Treasury states: "The three realms are in the belly of impermanent Yama, all beings are controlled by him, constantly revolving. Unable to escape, they can only cling to this place. The Lord of Death always holds us tightly, destined to die from the moment of birth. The six realms of beings constantly revolving, isn't it good to leave from here now? Let us go together to the city of liberation! There is the splendor of the immortal victor, forever peaceful and blissful, naturally accomplished." Therefore, in the analogy of the faults of samsara, the Vinaya says: "All are controlled by the impermanent rakshasa." Therefore, generate renunciation by ascertaining the reasons.

Furthermore, as previously stated, "Because the four elements gather, both the container and its contents are subject to destruction. Sentient beings, like old and decaying cities, are in constant motion." Therefore, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions. Similarly, things not created by humans are also impermanent, such as bubbles of water appearing as containers. Examples of impermanence and change include rising clouds, lightning, rainbows, and echoes. Impermanent beings are also subject to change. The fleeting impermanence of a moment is like illusions, magical tricks, and cities of gandharvas. Without a fixed time, impermanence should be contemplated by considering one's own lifespan. One should not be idle for even a moment but diligently engage in Dharma practice. As stated in the Extensive Play Sutra, "Conditioned things are impermanent, like the flame of a lamp, quickly arising and ceasing. Like the wind, they do not remain for long, and like bubbles, they are fragile and without essence. If examined, they are like trees in water, without movement. Like illusions, the mind is deceived. Until enlightenment is attained, never diminish your effort." Thus it is said. To contemplate the nature of definite impermanence, it is said, as in the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury, "Because it is encompassed by four extremes, there is nothing permanent. Life is uncertain, and death is unpredictable. Definitely, think from the heart that you will die." As it is said, having obtained a human body, this basis is bound by four extremes. There is no time for happiness, so one must practice the sacred Dharma. The end of birth is death, the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, and the end of height is falling. Therefore, there is nothing to trust, and it must definitely be abandoned. In particular, one's own bubble-like body is definitely subject to destruction. Death is uncertain; will I die today? Will I die tomorrow? Will I die tonight? Lying on this bed, will I die and not rise again tomorrow? Think in this way. As stated in the Sutra of Excellent Auspiciousness, "Who knows if they will die tomorrow? Therefore, practice Dharma immediately. The great army of the Lord of Death is not known to you all." Thus it is said. As stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "It is not appropriate to sit comfortably thinking, 'I will not die today.' The great army of the Lord of Death is not known to us." Thus it is said. As stated in the Nirvana Sutra, "This weak aggregate is full of faults and subject to destruction. Old age, sickness, and death constantly afflict it. It is the nature of existence."
