Attachment to the present life, desiring the pleasures of food and drink, engaging in the affairs of building residences and cities, endless busy activities, the cycle of love and hate day and night, the burden of worrying about superiors and subordinates, the perception of worldly fame and fortune, the superficial appearance of listening, contemplating, and meditating, the raging fire of love, hate, and jealousy, the thorns that always prick, all actions are for the sake of this life, always holding expectations of hope, teachers giving instructions without faith, friends competing with jealousy, the mountain of the eight worldly concerns being the strongest, the weakest being the conduct without learning and contemplation. The faults of mixing Dharma with one's own mind are extremely numerous, therefore, attaining liberation and realizing the Dharma is extremely difficult. The Vinaya Sutra says, "It is difficult to renounce small and large household affairs and first become a renunciate." It also says, "Some may have gone forth, but have not become vessels of virtue; although they have shaved their hair and beards, they have not entered the path of practice; this renunciation is not a true renunciation, nor is it that of a householder, like a market without water, like a butter lamp in a painting." The former also said, "Those who dwell at home desiring pleasure, will die without satisfaction." Therefore, practicing the Dharma properly and turning away from worldly appearances is crucial. Holding onto mindfulness and awareness, urging oneself without distraction. The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury says, "Always be mindful and aware, be cautious, contemplate the leisure and endowments, and accomplish the Bodhi of liberation." Like that, having obtained the difficult to obtain leisure and endowments, if one does not grasp the path of liberation this time, it is worse than returning empty-handed from the Isle of Gold. Therefore, practice a profound Dharma, and in any case, grasp the path of liberation. In all six times of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, through familiarity, do not forget the mindfulness of things, and through recognizing meaningful and meaningless actions, grasp the actions of mindfulness and awareness. Do not let the six consciousnesses be distracted by external objects, and urge yourself. For example, if one does not cross the river when there is a boat, then one cannot cross it later, what can one do then? When one obtains the boat of leisure and endowments, one must strive. The Bodhicharyavatara says, "This boat is difficult to find again, do not sleep in times of delusion." Similarly, when one has a wise, excellent horse, one must travel a long road; when warmth, moisture, and fertilizer are abundant, what seeds should one sow; when a hero and an army are present, one should conquer the enemy.

When gold and silver mines erupt, how should one acquire them? When autumn crops ripen, how should one accumulate them? When there is an escort in a fearful place, how should one be liberated? When there are debts, how should one greatly increase diligence? Just as a servant performs labor, when one obtains the precious human body with leisure and opportunity, one should not be idle but diligently engage in the Dharma, because impermanence comes quickly. Thinking about this, even between sleeping and breathing, there should be no gap, and one should diligently engage in the Dharma. As the glorious Atiśa said: This life is like being blown by many harmful winds, even more impermanent than a water bubble. Between breathing, waking up from sleep, where is there leisure? This is truly amazing! As it is said. Showing the reason why one should diligently engage in meaningful activities is said as follows: In the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury, it says: In walking, sleeping, sitting, and eating, etc., abandoning the six faults such as laziness, to accomplish the great meaning of higher realms and definite goodness, like a hungry person seeing food, one should engage in diligence in virtue day and night. Walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, waking up, eating, taking and rejecting external appearances and confused views, and all situations such as speaking, one should restrain laziness, idleness, indifference, distraction, busyness, and the unpacified aspects of body, speech, and mind, including the unpredicted. I have entered the Great Vehicle, the supreme Dharma, and I am not the same as these ordinary people, so I must greatly protect my mind. How could such a non-virtue arise now? Reproach yourself like this, and if it has arisen, confess and reveal it. If it has not arisen, cultivate joy. In this way, remembering, for virtuous actions with and without signs, one should do whatever arises without choice, like a hungry person eating whatever food is available, a thirsty person drinking whatever water is found, a poor person holding whatever wealth is obtained, a skilled doctor accumulating whatever medicine is obtained, an ignorant person cherishing and raising whatever child is born, a person in danger seeking whatever refuge is found, one should diligently engage in any virtuous action. This is
