Those that are reddish, and those that are completely black, likewise those that are completely decayed, likewise those that are completely worm-eaten, and those that are completely scattered are contemplated. Likewise, those that are completely white. Then, as an antidote to desire, the eight aspects of ugliness are meditated upon. There is no hearing or learning, therefore one wishes for the vehicle of the Pratyekabuddha. Thus it is said. The third is the Bodhisattva Vehicle, how it surpasses the Lesser Vehicle, and the Vehicle itself that is particularly superior. First, the realization of the two, skillful means of great compassion and wisdom of selflessness, is made distinct. As it is in the "Ratnavali": 'Emptiness possessing the essence of compassion, some achieve enlightenment.' And also: 'By compassion alone, one connects the realms of existence until enlightenment. In the Hearer Vehicle, the aspiration for the bliss of enlightenment and the dedication of actions are not taught, how can it become the Great Vehicle?' And in the "Compendium": 'Without skillful means, separated from wisdom, one falls into being a Hearer.' Thus it is said. The second has five parts. The essence of the Bodhisattva Vehicle is that all phenomena are realized like the sky, and the great deeds of benefiting others with great compassion become the supreme means of the cause. As it is in that very text: 'Why is this called the Great Vehicle of Enlightenment? Whoever rides it turns away the suffering of all sentient beings. This vehicle is like the sky, an immeasurable great mansion, the supreme vehicle that achieves joy, happiness, and bliss. Whoever rides it has no object of going in any direction. It is said to go to Nirvana, but one does not aim to go. Just as when a fire dies, there is no cause for its going. By that cause, it is thoroughly called Nirvana.' Thus it is. The definition is: Because one relies on whatever means to lead beings to the great city of liberation, it is called the Great Vehicle. The necessity is: to enable those with supreme intelligence to attain Buddhahood. The result is: the accomplishment of the eleventh, the Ground of All-Illuminating Light. Although these can be divided into many, here, in this context, there are two aspects: a brief explanation of the nature of the general path, and a detailed explanation of the tenets of each school. The first is the path of those with sharp faculties and great mental strength according to the system of the Characteristic Vehicle. That is, one should know the nature of the two truths, the basis; having known it, how to practice it; and the result of perfecting the path.

Of the three parts, the first is that all phenomena encompassed by appearance and existence, samsara and nirvana, are contained within the nature of the two truths. As it says in the Root Wisdom: The Buddhas teach the Dharma, relying on the two truths, the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. And it abides in the manner of the two truths. Among these, those that can appear as objects to the mind that perceives phenomena as having characteristics are the conventional truth. It is divided into two types: false conventional truth and true conventional truth. The first is that all phenomena, including appearance and existence, the environment and beings, and the constructions of the mind, are false conventional truths because they appear as the face of a false mind that perceives objects as mistaken. These things that appear to be permanent appear to be consistent in the face of a mistaken mind, they have function, but if examined, they are devoid of inherent existence, and they are like the eight examples of illusion, appearing as mere clear appearances of non-existence. As it says in the former: Like a dream, like an illusion, like a city of gandharvas, so is birth, so is abiding, so is also said to be cessation. The true conventional truth is that, although it appears to be mistaken, it is the cause of happiness and liberation, the ten virtuous actions are pure, the accumulation of merit such as generosity, and the samadhi of the mind of the four paths of accumulation, application, seeing, and meditation are all included in the truth of the path. As it says in the commentary on the Uttaratantra: All truths of the path are conditioned, and all conditioned things are conventional. The abiding of the nature of reality, the essence of emptiness, and the wisdom that encounters it, along with the aspect of pacifying elaboration, is the ultimate truth. It is divided into two types: the ultimate truth of names, which is conceptual, and the ultimate truth of true nature, which is non-conceptual. The first is the wisdom that, when distinguished and examined by reason, realizes that everything has always abided in the nature of reality, which is unestablished in anything, and arises in accordance with that nature. As it says in the Two Truths: The cessation of birth is the ultimate, and it is also accepted because it is in accordance with it. From the unborn, the pacification of all elaboration, the term ultimate is established. The second is that phenomena are originally free from the elaboration of existence and non-existence, and are the pure aspect of the nature of reality. As it says in the Root Wisdom: Not known by others, peaceful, without conceptual thought, different in meaning.
