Carefully examine things that can be considered objects, such as circles, triangles, and rectangles, to see if they can truly be considered objects. Similarly, examine colors such as white, yellow, red, green, and blue. Furthermore, consider whether the mind, body, speech, and intention are one or separate. When various feelings such as liking and disliking, pleasant and unpleasant, happiness and suffering arise, are the mind and these feelings one or separate? If they are one, then the mind should have color, because it is one with the body. If they are separate, then examine where each of them resides. Through examination and analysis, it is found that they are neither one nor separate, therefore the body will naturally dissipate, becoming indivisible particles, leaving no trace. The mind is like a bird flying through the sky, leaving no trace, which is the nature of the mind, namely awareness. This awareness does not fall into any side, whether it is subject and object, birth and death, permanence and annihilation, and so on. This awareness, which is nothing, is clear, bright, and lucid. It transcends the realm that can be described by language, because it is liberated from the signs of delusion from the very beginning. As it is said in "The Pearl Garland": In the original, primordial purity, one cannot even say there is such a thing as "delusion." Likewise, what is non-delusion? Therefore, delusion is pure from the very beginning. Third, examine the place of arising, dwelling, and going. Although the nature of the ground has not been found, where does this essence of the mind, which grasps selflessness as self, first arise from? Where does it dwell in the middle? Where does it go in the end? Also examine and analyze how it arises, how it dwells, and how it ceases. As it is said in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": Then, where does the mind dwell? If you say it exists, then things are empty. If you say it does not exist, then examination is clear. Emptiness and clarity are indivisible. Therefore, when the mind is placed in its own state, and the inner and outer abodes of the mind are sought, although the essence of the dweller is not found, how does this flow of thoughts, which never ceases, which follows after the past, future, and present, how does this moving consciousness move? Where does it go? Does it go because there is an essence of the goer, or does it go because there is no essence of the goer? If it goes without the essence of the goer, then the goer is meaningless. This essence of the goer, this actor, does it walk like gods and humans, or does it enter the ground, or does it fly into the sky? Does it walk like the forms of the six realms of beings? What is its shape, color, size? This examination is an important key instruction for finding the mind, therefore it should be taken seriously, and one should strive day and night to examine it.

Furthermore, it is like searching for the mind with the mind, subduing the mind with the mind, seeking the traces of the mind, demolishing the house of the mind, and blocking the false holes of the mind. For example, it is like truth and falsehood being brought to court, like aligning spears against each other whether the fur is stroked smoothly or against the grain, or like threading a needle, one should carefully investigate the nature of the mind. Among these, subduing the mind with the mind is like breaking stone with stone, or cutting iron with iron. Thus, after the above examination and analysis, when the antidote of the observer arrives, failing to establish any real characteristic anywhere, the object of observation itself is emptiness by nature, purified without root, like cutting the root of a tree, then the branches and leaves will naturally wither. The observer's awareness also cannot be pointed out as what it is, and in the nature of each individual's self-awareness, the primordial purity and spontaneously accomplished wisdom naturally manifest. At that time, if abiding, then observe the nature of abiding; if moving, then observe the nature of moving. Thus, in the self-power free from the knower and the known, in the unobstructed awareness, naturally abiding, the state of primordial emptiness and purity is revealed. As the ‘Tied Liberation’ says: "Examining all inside and out, emptiness is liberation." And also: "If one knows the Alaya, when it is completely pure, the meaning of the ground is realized, liberation is in its own place." Thus it is said. If one asks, is it because there were places of birth and the three realms of samsara in the past that they still exist now? The former is to examine the object and to conclude that it is not established, while here, it is to examine the subject and to conclude on the nature. As the Dharma Lord Omniscient said, the former is to conclude that the mind is without basis or root, while the latter is to reveal the reality of abiding in the meaning of what has been concluded. Thus it is said, therefore, one should repeatedly and thoroughly engage in detailed observation and analysis with diligence.
